For the psalms the Coverdale psalter found in the 1928 or 1662 Book of Common Prayer is my favorite. Other than that KJV is good.

Last time there was a thread about this (probably only a couple days ago, if that.) someone recommended waiting for 6th edition of new oxford annoted bible to come out around the end of this year. That's probably ideal. Otherwise I would recommend a plain NRSVue. A top tip is that it can be way more fun to read it like an atheist than a Christian. Wherever you come across apparent contradictions, don't compulsive try to harmonize them. Allow for the possibility that you're reading a compilation of books and stories that have often been haphazardly stitched together, were written by authors who frequently disagreed with each other, and were often subsequently edited by people with their own vested interests.
