Wherever you come across apparent contradictions, don't compulsive try to harmonize them. Allow for the possibility that you're reading a compilation of books and stories that have often been haphazardly stitched together, were written by authors who frequently disagreed with each other, and were often subsequently edited by people with their own vested interests.
