The Dragon Age novels, they are really mid, but the setting is very good. They get worse over time sadly.

nah I'm just bored with mainstream franchises and wanted some sort of fresher takes on settings. Not really picky, ik the OP suggests fantacy settings but its less about the genre than it is about settings.

The Man of Gold by Muhammad Abd-al-Rahman Barker. The sequel Flamesong is even better. Tekumel is one of the more unique fictional settings.

Saberhagen's Empire of the East trilogy has a very cool premise. Haven't read it yet though.

The Years of Rice and Salt is a collection of vignettes progressing over time into an alternate history where Europe was completely depopulated by the Black Plague. Interesting stuff like Zheng He's treasure fleeting exploring Incan Peru, the colonization of an empty Europe by the bordering races, China and India reenacting WWI's alpine campaign in the Himalayas, and so on.

ossendowski's beast men and gods is an autobiographical travel adventure novel of a guy who had to flee from the soviet union's roundups and only carried his rifle with him through the siberian landscape all the way over to central asia, crossing paths with numerous esoteric and mystical figures along the way, and witnessing the death of ancient empires and nomadic living and the birth of modern states as he went on his journey. pretty captivating stuff.
