It’s 2002, you have $12,000 and you want to put half in Amazon and spend the rest on traveling out west living like a dirtbag hiking and climbing. To do so you would have to leave your girlfriend and quit your business analyst job. Your parents and peers talk you out of it and your wasting your life.

Instead you stay with your girl, keep your job and use the money to buy her a ring. By 2012 later she stops having sex either you. She hates your family too. During Covid after a year of marriage counseling she divorces you and keeps the house (which has a fat home equity loan to be paid off for the new kitchen). And then this year you get laid off because of AI and you’re now starting over approaching 50.

This is only true if you're driving down the highway drinking a 6 pack with your bro and he's slobbin all over your fat hog and you are about to nut but then hit a deer and the truck crashes headfirst into a tree and you will never ever walk again and nothing else works and your best bro is dead and those first 18 years of your life were everything.

Parts of it. It’s not that bad (thank god). I just wanted to illustrate what I think the passage meant.

But what’s the true is as your progress through life you close certain doors - on various big life decisions and lots of times you think back to how others pressured you either directly or indirectly or maybe you just tried to please others and so it’s natural to go through and think about what could have been. As the saying goes life is lived forward but understood backward.

I remember this youtube video -- which I sadly can't find anymore -- of a dude asnwering questions about how his off-grid life. He tells a story about an old friend who comes to visit him ( now both in their 60s I'm guessing), this friend had a normal life -- wife, kids, etc.. -- and is amazed at his house in the forest. The friend tells the guy from the video that his life was his dream and breaks down crying.
The way he told it stuck with me. I hope to not do the same mistake

Yea - I think this is very common. To some extent we all sell out and compromise our dreams to conform. And at the end we only have ourselves and our unconquered dreams. This quote (and the whole book) are so good. And it’s very sad too.

Not sure if you read Into the wild. I think it’s a great book for a number of reasons but McCandless meets an older guy who he encourages to get out more and see the world. I think the old have just as much to learn from young people as vice versa There’s a beauty to youth and one example is how they see the world fresh and most of the time less jaded…not so much worrried about conventuel things. it’s when you kill this inner child in you that you’re life is over.

It's meant to be the folksy "would of" instead of the correct "would've". Cormac McCarthy does the same. It's meant to indicate how the characters would write it.

Totally agree with your point about youth. It's reminds me of this short story I just read yesterday which perfectly illustrates your point. You may have read it as it seems it is famous: Bullet in the Brain by Tobias Wolff, if you haven't give it a shot it takes 10 minutes to read.

no it's not true. you don't suddenly think of some contingency that would change everything, because life is just not that serious. i think it means an old maid walked into the room and said she was waiting for him to be older.

Yes, most of your life will be spent rationalizing that it "gets" better. Most people will miss their chance to make it better because they think the universe unfolds as it should.

The true part is you can read a book that has ideas in it or one that doesn't, but I don't think that means books don't have to have ideas. I was gonna make this my second thread on this board.

well if you look at eastern philosophies or Spinoza, it seems that the key is to just like in the moment, go with the flow, and accept that you cannot control you wants and desires but you can can 'observe' them.
But there is no big miracle as far as I'm aware

On point. I think when I hit 30 it really sunk in that I was living my life partially with the expectations of others on me, I mean we all are to some degree. At least for me, I grew up poor so my years teenage-20s I spent mostly focused on the pursuit of money. Now that I “have”: a good paying job, a new house, a new car, and infinite job security, I realized that this life I made for myself wasn’t built for me. I wanted to be a young father, but I’m no longer young. I have a house but it’s empty. Better late the never, but I regret the years I wasted pursuing something that means little to me.

I think he's saying that when you die you have

1.) Yourself (washed up)
2.) What you could have done

And then what you did was based on lies / bullshit.

I would interpret then that the secret which is unique to everybody is simply that you failed to "know thyself" when it really mattered and if you had you would have made better choices for yourself which would have resulted in a better life.

Regret is a waste of time. You wanted to be a young father, be an old father. Fill your house now. We become too easily obsessed with other people’s ideas of success and adventure.

the movie was ok except at the end where right before the credits they put in like a five minute minidocumentary about how white males killed all the buffalo, well they they did, but we already know that, we didn't need that added on to a fictional movie, or was that crap in the book too?

Flipside here:
Knocked someone up pretty young. Now I'm 35 with 2 kids, the oldest turning 17 this summer.

Having kids that early hampered me. I didn't grow the way I should've. I never got to pursue higher education, and even vocational school wasn't possible (due to my now ex being a lazy bitch) and jobs were harder to get, and once gotten they were harder to progress in due to not being able to put in the hours as much.

In a few years maybe a second life opens up to me, the kids out of the house, or old enough at least to manage themselves. New possibilities, if I know what to do with them.

But regrets? Not really. I love my kids. Wouldn't give them up for anything in the world. But I find that fantasy popping into my head often. The fantasy of me living your life, the one where I focus on finishing school, getting a good paying job, etc. and THEN getting kids.

having done a lot of travel and i guess adventurous type stuff i think the key is to go out and sow your wild oats while young so that you can settle down with a happy family later in life and not have to constantly think about "what could have been" and second guess your entire life. and it has to be in that order or else youre destroying your family for some dumb reason

the main thing that seems to really fuck westoids over is the career drive, not family like redditors like to complain about. men and w*men destroy their families because of their careers but then put the blame on their kids or wife (or wife selection) instead of mr goldberg. dont settle for some whore cunt just because its convenient with your work schedule and always make sure that your job is supporting you and not the other way around

only trveblood hyperborean olympian men will understand this wisdom

also i know its a book and not real life but mcdonald gets turbo fucked and didnt have life figured out in the book either

it's part of the hubris theme going on. He couldn't keep up with the paperwork, yet he kept buying all the hide he could. He thought the town would flourish and out of nowhere, demand for hides just disappears. The same way the hunter cannot tame nature, the civilized man cannot predict the market (society)

Only if you believe what you're told, and don't strike out like a lunatic madman on a journey of autodidactic adventure from the moment you are able.

I have never cared how things are supposed to be or what ought to be done. I grew up with history and stories from centuries ago as my entertainment, and I notice that none of the advice we were given in school had anything to do with it. You are not supposed to be chivalrous and creative and brave and noble, you aren't supposed to be pious or honorable, you're supposed to suck left wing cocks and lick shit off the feet of people who hate you and be a slave until you die.

So I said no, and I went my own way, and I don't give a damn. I don't want the world or fame or money, I want to be able to do what I want, and nobody can actually stop me. When they say you "can't" do something, they usually mean that you aren't "supposed" to, but this means nothing. I'm not supposed to steal electricity, but I do. I'm supposed to pay my taxes, but I don't. I'm supposed to be taking SSRIs but I don't, I'm supposed to like faggots and niggers but I don't, I'm supposed to think society is progressing, but I don't.

I'm supposed to I'm supposed to, fuck supposing, I want to smoke cigars and drink whiskey and write and hate, and throw bottles at cars and piss off bridges, I want to walk 500 miles to see a waterfall and disappear off the map for six months at a time to jack off in the woods and scream at possums. I want to play cards for money and start fights at protests about shit I don't care about, and carry a knife the length of my forearm in public and steal gasoline out of peoples' cars at concerts, and I do!

Who the hell is interested in answers? Answers to what? I'm tired of questions and I'm tired of pretending that any who hasn't stitched their own face up in a gas station bathroom is entitled to ask them. Fuck everything, fuck the nation, fuck the media, fuck the government, fuck propriety.
