That is my only issue with him, other than that, I don't really care. I did like reading his Maps of Meaning book, and I did watch some of his Bible lectures, and they were good. Particularly Maps of Meaning gave me a lots of insights on how my parents think of things.

The problem with Peterson is that he is an interesting clinical psychologist, who insists on being so many things more than a clinical psychologist. He wants to be a philosopher, and a political theorist, and a political commentator, and a businessman, and a general educator, and all of these things all at once using the same boiler plate approach. Liberalism coupled with Jungian psychology can go pretty far with psychology and mythological analysis, but it fails once it enters the political arena because the guy ends up calling everyone who disagrees with his sentimental liberalism and metaphorical but only metaphorical religious sympathy a psychopath when they are quite obviously not. He himself has said that psychopathy is actually quite rare. So which is it? Is psychopathy rare or are all these illiberals psychopaths? Both can’t be true and if it’s the latter, it undermines his clinical psychological thinking which is the bedrock of his entire project. So Peterson just shoots himself in the foot over and over again every time he tries to take what really should be a niche psychology for treating patients clinically and tries to turn it into some kind of political and religious program.

I don’t like this excessive use of “cult leader” or some conception of it where it doesn’t apply, not just by you specifically but generally.
People need meaning, and sometimes a charismatic speaker or thinker, typically in a field of the humanities, speaking about social issues, or psychology as Peterson does, but also interspersed with a broad knowledge of the humanities and topical issues of the current day, is what helps give it to them. We need teachers. Humanity in general does.
To call him a “cult leader” for that - well, maybe a good “cult leader” is exactly what some people need. If you wanted to criticize the Boy Scouts, you could call them a cult, but it’s generally a benevolent one which does good things for young boys, teaches them discipline and survival skills and socialization and teamwork etc. Charismatic or influential figures in the humanities, art, literature, or politics likewise. I’m not comparing his position in world history or Western thought generally to someone like Plato or Socrates, but you could call either of them a “cult leader” dismissively, which just doesn’t do it for me.

Peterson also IS essentially a celebrity of some considerable status now, with a sizable audience, and still some occasional attention in the mainstream media, then some decently big presence in alternative media, so he actually does have some “importance” to this extent. If he knows this, takes this into account and also wants to make sure he uses his platform to contribute some good things to the world, and to speak out against concerning trends, I wouldn’t call it “thinking of himself as a messiah.” It’s just an understanding of his situation and even a sense of responsibility to Western culture, and the young men he evidently sincerely wants to help and who are a significant bulk of his fan-base.

He exists more like a totem for them to project their ideals upon than derive any wisdom from. If they even read any of his books they certainly didn’t learn anything from them they can apply. They can only insist on the value of the person and ideas.
In this way he occupies the space of a political figure, not a philosopher or thinker.

I just see him as a wannabe mystic who studied esoteric religions after realizing Freud was a fraud. I think he saw them as fertile ground for ideas about how to understand your inner world. I think he genuinely cared for people suffering mental problems so he took all these religious ideas that weren't well known to the average Westerner and synthesized them into something palatable they could easily understand and use to get their heads straight. He was definitely versed in Gnosticism and Kabbalah but I don't see him as a hand-rubbing merchant type. I think he had pretty good intentions.
