This book is not about chess at all, it’s about living in a totalitarian state and trying to keep your self against disintegration.

sure, but chess madness is a real phenomenon. the thing about trying to preserve an identity is there, sure, but it isn't wrong to think of the book as an exploration of the connection between chess and insanity.

Sure, the chess book he finds and the games he studies are important for him and have importance for the study, so yeah, chess is a topic, but not the main one I’d say. Chess could be replaced with something else in the story desu.

with what? connect four? there isn't a documented, widespread connection between another board game or other hobby and insanity like there is with chess and the book was written to examine that connection.
