Read often, read across many topics and genres, and read difficult material.
A trap I fell into often was fixating on a sentence or parts of a sentence when reading ahead and backtracking would have gotten me through faster.

Don't bother reading faster. You should read with the intent to savor and understand the context. This includes reading slowly and analyzing each piece of text. Sometimes, it means scanning it paragraph by paragraph. There is no one preferred pace. You should enjoy your books like fine wine.
