Friendly Reminder that bakker is KING
>Then the madness fell away. Once again it was the pure thunder of the charge. The strange camaraderie of men bent to a single, fatal purpose. Hummocks, scrub, and the bones of the Vulgar Holy Warโ€™s dead rushed beneath. The wind bled through chain links, tousled Thunyeri braids and Tydonni crests. Bright banners slapped against the sky. The heathen, wicked and foul, drew closer, ever closer. One last storm of arrows, these ones almost horizontal to the ground, punching against shield and armour. Some were struck from their saddles. Tongue tips were bitten off in the concussion of the fall. The unhorsed arched across the turf, screamed and swatted at the sky. Wounded mounts danced in frothing circles nearby. The rest thundered on, over grasses, through patches of blooming milkwort waving in the wind. They couched their lances, twenty thousand men draped in great mail hauberks over thick felt, with coifs across their faces and helms that swept down to their cheeks, riding chargers caparisoned in mail or iron plates. The fear dissolved into drunken speed, into the momentum, became so mingled with exhilaration as to be indistinguishable from it. They were addicted to the charge, the Men of the Tusk. Everything focused into the glittering tip of a lance. The target nearer, nearer โ€ฆ The rumble of hooves and drums drowned their kinsmenโ€™s song. They crashed through a thin screen of sumac โ€ฆ Saw eyes whiten in sudden terror. Then impact. The jarring splinter of wood as lances speared through shield, through armour. Suddenly the ground became still and solid beneath them, and the air rang with wails and shouts. Hands drew sword and axe. Everywhere figures grappled and hacked. Horses reared. Blades pitched blood into the sky. And the Kianene fell, undone by their ferocity, crumpling beneath northern hands, dying beneath pale faces and merciless blue eyes. The heathen recoiled from the slaughterโ€”and fled.

I was talking about him infiltrating Heliopolis with this absurd notion that he, pretending to be some no name pixie scrub, could knock out the Fear Knight and aid in the escape from the Gorgons. And that they're actually letting him meet with Glirastes instead of keeping his ass locked up is fucking retarded. People will tell me "just keep reading faggot" but it's just so ridiculous and it's not the first time this series has asked me to suspend my disbelief and I've found it extremely hard to do so.

Wheel of Time is probably the only other epic with lots of magic. Stormlight too though people will disagree on that because of their hatred for Sanderson. There's also Powder Mage which is less of an epic, but has a good magic system with multiple characters being various types of magic users within a flintlock era so lots of guns too enhancing their magic.

Yeah, they're usually minor antagonists who exist to get easily killed or embarrassed by the hero. It'd be funny if a writer set up a situation like that, and the dirty old man who exists to make the MC look cool turned out actually to be a threat.

about halfway through the first novella and this book is insanely bad, but it's also so unintentionally funny i can't stop reading it
the writing is the perfect blend of "what if
Steven Seagal wrote himself into a fantasy novel?" and a 16yo edgelord's Xanga

early on he enters a village and proceeds to slaughter multiple groups of deadly mercenaries while sadly telling them that god doesn't exist, that honor is for losers, and then tops it off with this:

>Masterson used his sword to point at one of his dead sons, then to the other.โ€œYou would consider these distractions?โ€

>โ€œOnly if you allow them to be.โ€

>โ€œAnd have I?โ€

>โ€œYou have.โ€

>โ€œThen let me be distracted no further.โ€

>The Caballeran strode forward.

>A fist smashed into the old manโ€™s face.

>Masterson dropped to his knees, the sword plummeting.

>Bayne hit again. And again. And again.

>The downed mercenary no longer wore a face. His features were flattened, looking like a butchered side of beef. With a last gasp that forced a red bubble between the crushed slash of his mouth, Masterson fell over on his side. Dead. Unmoving. No more.

>The beauty of LitRPG as a genre that combines the rules of video games with traditional fantasy is that world building becomes more than just an endless expansion of lore. It becomes a gameplay mechanic. Instead of endlessly describing the history of a nation, LitRPG authors have figured out how to make their worlds inherently engaging for readers by making them interactive.

>LitRPG is an adventure fiction subgenre in which characters experience the story through a game-like interface. The form has exploded in popularity over the last decade, largely thanks to the rise of web novels and self-publishing platforms like Royal Road. Unlike traditional fantasy, (...) the world itself becomes a living game board, and the characters' interactions with it are governed by set rules. This shift from static, detailed world building to a more interactive, dynamic model marks a significant evolution in fantasy storytelling.

>One of the most striking aspects of LitRPG world building is its accessibility. In traditional epic fantasy, the sheer intricacy of the setting can be overwhelming. Sanderson, for all his brilliance, has created worlds with histories so deep that casual readers may find themselves lost in the minutiae of the backstory.

>In contrast, LitRPG authors have a built-in mechanism for making world building more digestible: the game interface. By presenting the world through the lens of a game, authors can introduce complex systems in bite-sized pieces.

It's 5 years because he's finished the first half of the series and will do Mistborn era 3 next. Once that's finished he will go back to Stormlight. So that's at least three books he'll be releasing plus some other Cosmere related ones and I believe 2030 was the estimated date for Stormlight 6. Considering Wind and Truth ended leading to some sort of Cosmere shared universe thing, it looks like he's trying to tidy everything up for Stormlight.

As do I because even though he gets shit on, I do enjoy Sanderslop. I think he needs to make his writing tighter and try and steer away from the MCU like feel that Wind and Truth had. If he goes back to early Way of Kings/Words of Radiance quality of writing, I'll be much happier but that was also down to a strong editor. He probably has a lot of power now over publishers that he can refuse an editor or at least pick one favourable to him. He probably is aware of some of the criticism so though we shall see...

Just like he's had the same in-house Dragonsteel Entertainmentโ„ข overall LORE editor Peter Ahlstrom (also a personal friend like Isaac) since the early days (before the 2010s). His first illustrator wasn't Michael and his first edtior wasn't Moshe.

The parts when I'm not having fun are the insane, Eye of Argon-esque sentences like "he quaffed another drink of the amber liquid" but any time he's disemboweling a man or crushing in faces with his mighty fists i'm happy

somebody give me a fantasy book that doesn't melt off the shelf alongside these heaters: mcnaughton's throne of bones, peake's gormenghast, wolfe's sun cycle, vance's lyonesse

I feel like nothing else compares. leiber, dunsany, moorcock, schweitzer, howard, mj harrison, CAS, etc. all have their moments, but nothing can stand up to those above

I should probably just read 19th c. for fiction at this point, I've exhausted 20th c. genre, highbrow, and now fantasy

>In traditional epic fantasy, the sheer intricacy of the setting can be overwhelming.
Yes, and getting lost in the world is kind of the point? It's a feature, not a bug.
Imagine thinking that you have to make the world into a video game for it to be an organic part of the story, or that worldbuilding is defined by "endlessly describing the history of a nation".
Then again, if your idea of worldbuilding is based on Sanderson I can see why you'd yearn for something less bloated.
It's actually fascinating, this person's answer to bad, overly autistic worldbuilding is not to do good worldbuilding but rather to go overboard with the autism and turn everything into stats.

That does not sound like you are having fun at all! I was gonna say... there were some typical 'gruesome' fight scenes--I mean, the entire world it takes place in is typical sword n' sorc--so it's not like it's any different than others in its genre. Honestly, some of the Darkbow books were trifling. You can see a fledgling author growing into what he does and does not enjoy writing.

Rape, torture, murder, deceiving, slavery, genocide, bestiality, cruelty, and even CP and Necrophilia. All of that is used by Wolfe in the Sun Cycle as vehicle for entertainment. And if you wonder "Can't you say the same about any other author of the genre?", Well, Wolfe is particularly known for his deceiving writing antics, he uses everything to torture and play mind-games with the reader. Wolfe is a jerk, and he enjoys it. Any other author always try to play fair, to make their work clear and readable to succeed, not Wolfe. Wolfe doesn't give a fuck, his "evil genius" is stronger than his "Christian self".
In the few interviews available of him, many of them quite lengthy, you can tell there's a little mischievous devil inside of him, at all times, when he laughs and throw jokes around.
He's evil in a genius way, unmerciful with the reader, and that makes the Sun cycle series special, and different from any other writers.

I know. I said that you can say the same about many other books in the same genre. But with the difference that Wolfe use all of that darkness with an ill intention towards the reader. He enjoys making you walk in circles unable to find a way out from that gallery of horrors. Pilling up unresolved questions in your mind to keep you always in a mourning mood. Keeping you weaker and weaker to face the new crap he has in store for you. He doesn't want you to "enjoy" the reading, he just taunts you, tickling your ever increasing morbid curiosity, knowing that you will keep going just to see what happens, or if there is any light at the end. And you pay the price putting yourself through the torture of the writing devices of that jerk till the very end.
>"Nothing Severian writes indicates what the opaque body may have been; but the
thoughtful reader will find little difficulty in advancing at least one plausible speculation."
That's how he finishes the book, still throwing one more handful of bullshit at your face.. The guy is a piece of shit. Other authors wouldn't dare to fuck around with their readers like that, only a psycho evil bastard would do that so blatantly.

md5: 4b3b2a231ef53c2a3d26f9c0d6300193๐Ÿ”
I finished Lud-in-the-Mist. I found it beautifully written, but somehow very unpleasant. I did like the history between Lud and the fairy land, the way the Luddites turned everything fairy into all things cursed and obscene while retaining both physical and cultural aspects of their nearly discarded ancestors, the creepy random appearances of fairy stuff that at times tended to take an almost horror like turn. I didn't expect the action to take place mostly in the extremely prosaic Lud, but this was spiced by the occasional fairy incident, so it was fine.
What I really didn't expect was this becoming a detective story, which wouldn't have been bad had it not been kind of boring and uninteresting. It might have been because there was no reason to care about it except maybe curiosity or maybe because I utterly despised the self-absorbed protagonist.
This fed into that unpleasantness I felt throughout the book regarding most of its characters. I don't expect to like everyone when I read a book but it's kind of annoying to be expected to sympathise with the melancholy of some guy who only realises his son is a human being when he gets kidnapped and whose only reaction to finding his kidnapped daughter about to be sold off is that it is a violation of the law in that particular place. The latter in particular stood in stark contrast with his friend who comes to understand and appreciate his own daughter, while our protagonist does not even spare his own a thought. I'm not sure why I disliked this so, considering both children are cardboard cutouts, probably because we're supposed to sympathise with his newfound love for his son which I thought nothing more than a sort of narcissism anyway. His wife and friend are minor characters and still have satisfying development and emotional reunion scenes, unlike the protagonist.
Other than this, I really enjoyed the world Mirrless created. It was the perfect blend of magic and the mundane that tries to shelter itself from it and made me crave fruit.

Man these books were fucking weird. The first one was pretty close to the movie (or rather, the movie didn't change much), so that was fine. But after that they turn into weird bodice-ripper romances in cro magnon times. Like three-quarters of one of the later books involves her spending an entire year in a cave with a white man and neither of them being able to figure out sex with each other because she keeps bending over and presenting like the neanderthals taught her to do but he comes from a matriarchal cromag society so he doesn't understand her signals and doesn't know he's supposed to "take" her. When they finally figure it out they have crazy wild sex for weeks, then go on a journey and stay in a free-love longhouse where once again mutual confusion gets in the way and she sleeps in a black man's bed while he self-flagellates thinking his jealousy and desire to possess her exclusively is wrong. They eventually reconnect and go on a journey and see some horny elephants in musk and watch the semen ooze freely from their massive turgid dicks and get so horny they start fucking in the middle of the elephants.

It's an extremely Christian narrative, quite possibly the MOST non-explicit Christian allegory written. You're approaching it from an extreme surface level and not understanding the work from the philosophical and psychological level it deserves.

It's not about "rape is bad therefore it's not Christian". NOR is it about "there's rape in the bible therefore it IS Christian". Neither are the point. The central image of Christianity is Christ on the cross. Think about why that is. Think about what it GENUINELY represents.

If you're still not getting it, read the Book of Job.. and don't anthropomorphize it.

Got a cool book in the mail the other day check it out. Library of America very nice cover.
Mine is an ex-library (Brooklyn Public Library) copy that still has a protective wrap around the dust jacket. It's removable but I haven't gotten to it yet, which is why I haven't photographed my copy.

It contains
>R. A. Lafferty - Past Master
>Joanna Russ - Picnic on Paradise
>Samuel R. Delany - Nova
>Jack Vance - Emphyrio

Has anyone read Nova or the Joanna Russ novel? Are they any good?
I bought this book mainly for Past Master and because I wanted to read Emphyrio as well, but I have heard of both Delany and Russ. I wanted to read Russ' We Who Are About To at some point and still intend to

Itโ€™s not /bad/ but the man has burned nearly as many words as GRRM and the story has gone nowhere. You canโ€™t write 10 000 pages of setup and think itโ€™s worth it because some people had lunch and found a missing McGuffin inbetween. Not only that, heโ€™s apparently so bored with it he fucks off to write an even more derivative fantasy story.
The entitlement of the asshole who leaves that pile of garbage unfinished and expects you to buy his new unfinished universe is just crazy. Why do people indulge them at all? Fucking finish a series. The best books in the world didnโ€™t need 14 books to tell a story, why do you? World building is a cope, most of what they โ€œbuildโ€ is entirely meaningless assuming itโ€™s leading to a point at all.

There isn't much to say about it besides it being a case study on how character writing, prose, and story telling are different skills.
He can't write a few interesting characters and the sardonic wit of his narration makes his work distinct but the actual story is kind of bland. Probably why his strongest book is the Heroes.

The quality of the storytelling stands out. With self publishing so common you have to wade through a lot of stuff where the people aren't that talented. You can tell right away when an author has "it". The guy knows how to get you invested. I find the card system interesting, and a story told from the perspective of a humble shopkeeper with his store as his nice safe home base.

Then you have redefined the word Jew to mean something other than Jew. Just say Satanic or degenerate because most of the Jews I know promote family values. It's like those libs that try to redefine the word White as racist and uptight instead of literally meaning a person with light skin

I know "Jews", obviously 100% white European ancestry, don't practice Judaism whatsoever, or are even Buddhist or something like that, share exactly the same culture as I do, but still self identify as "Jewish" first and foremost. The state of mind you call Jewish is called postmodernist and hedonist and it was mainly created by the French intelligentsia to dab on us French peasants
Jews and Africans are vulnerable to absorbing it because the French either colonized them or used them as a minority go between in earlier times
However in general most of the Jews I meet are just olive to brown men who don't like homosexuals and pray on Saturdays instead of Sundays.

It starts out that way, but snowballs into a much bigger story. A lot of people classify it as litrpg, but it really isn't, it's just a fantasy science fiction book that barrows some elements from what the litrpg guys are doing. Would be kino
I'm sure Red God will be fun but it feels like PB's caught between chosen one fantasy and gritty anyone-can-die grimdark. The first trilogy already ended with the founding of a new regime, the sequels ending the same way would be a bit disappointing. I think he's banking on a pyrrhic victory for Darrow and company; yeah the Republic wins, but it's bittersweet rather than triumphant. Maybe Darrow gouges out his eyes and wanders off into the Mercurian desert lol

Is it the bakker kind of misery where it seems consistent with the story and characters, or the Rothfuss/Brandon Sandernonion Mornonion misery where it's contrived bad stuff happening only to the MCs because the plot needs it/author is so bad he can't get it done a better way?
I read the first three books, and at least in those it was the latter, which really downgraded the experience. In the first book it was okayish because it kickstarted the plot, but in the others it was just bad

Just started part 4 of Dark Age.
As it stands it's the worst book in the series. It started strong and I could take some of the grim nature of it but at a certain point it just became gratuitous. You gotta at least give me some hope at some point but you never get it at least through the first 3 parts. It's not interesting or entertaining when you know going into every storyline that it's completely hopeless and everything that can go to shit will go to shit. Like I just finished the part where Ephraim goes back to warn Sefi and it goes EXACTLY as you would expect it and I found myself very disinterested through it all when I already know he's going to fail.

Tried reading Stiger's Tigers, Chronicles of an imperial legionary office by Alan Marc Edelheit and good god is it badly written. I don't have high standards but for traditionally published stuff this is shit.
It's to do with the prose being extremely simplistic and the narrator voice being very off, like the protagonist is speaking in his own head in the third person. Just dreadful.

It's about complexity and prose. Simplify prose and you get YA. Take Harry potter or the tripod trilogy for example. Both good for the reason that it's easier to digest for smaller minds. This is why women love harry potter and romanceslop. Bakker is not adult because of his edginess. He is adult because of his above average complex philosophy and prose. More so with something like gene wolfe. You think 14 year olds are reading that? Red Rising is YA because of its simple prose. Jack Vance's Dragon Masters, though lowbrow sci fi world of 80s style alien dinosaurs, is not YA because of its complexity in story and prose.
A 14 year old would read Red Rising. Anything that a producer could look at and think "hmmm this could be an easily digestible tv show/movie for the masses!" is YA.

I was looking at the old threads linked earlier and the discussion quality has really degraded. Even the 2008 cringe ftw recommendations felt more honest than the endless stream of pol talk and buzzwords. That 2015 thread contained actual discussion you can't have anymore now for some reason.
