Japanese Fantasy Literature
Just read the first volume of Twelve Kingdoms and it was amazing. Any other worthwhile Japanese fantasy literature?

Like Twelve Kingdoms, I'd prefer actual novels and not the anime style light novels.

what makes it amazing?

I haven't personally read it, but From the New World won some Japanese Hugo Award equivalent and the anime adaptation was really good.

Maybe I'll read it next.

Guin Saga is/was immensely popular in Japan (and autistically long), it's the main inspiration for Berserk. I have no idea how good it is but some anons said it was, unfortunately very little of it has been translated. I might pick it up and see for myself actually.

Good writing and an interesting world. What they shown so far feels refreshing, even though its a 1992 book. The translation also reads extremely well.

The anime adaptation was horrid. They girl exclusively functioned as a mouthpiece for the author to ask questions with, the only character with a personality got obliterated after his dick sucking adventure and the whole cast was bland to no end.
If the pig at least stayed consistent in its' debased machiavellianism, it could've had a semblance of identity, but even that barely stayed congruent.
Real shame, since I liked the world quite a lot, but maybe the book is more coherent.

Moribito and the beast player are quite similar and also had anime adaptations akin to 12 kingdoms, Ritatekina marie (if you speak japanese) along with the other mikage eiji books, zaregoto, crest of the stars, sky crawlers and harmony by project itoh.

I hope this book is nothing like the adapation because that show was fucking awful.

Guin Saga goes up and down, some books extremely good, others are shit. It just had a loyal fanbase that stuck with it.

Is there even a book series that is good the whole way through? Outside Harry Potter of course.

You're kinda fucked because LNs are the real deal in Japan. I can't even remember any recent regular novels.

light novel is literally just a format. they opted to go for numerous smaller volumes with art over massive tomes. gives more people sources of income, I suppose.

The show was pretty good, desu. It had some issues, but the story itself was enjoyable.

>start off with an elementary school mystery-drama
>episode long infodump
>pivot to several episodes of isekai powerfantasy murderslop (almost stopped watching here)
>continue the school drama as if nothing happened
>characters learn that they are literally genetically modified to change their behavior, including making them homosexual, but instead of being explored further this is written off as a funny gag and never mentioned again
>time skip to adulthood, but there might as well not have been, because all the characters are just as immature as they were as children. Also the dangers they fought against in the first half (memory wiping by the government and monsters that eat children) are now determined to be actually a good thing so there's no need to change society whatsoever
>predictable war subplot with insultingly unsubtle "twists". In the end the only sympathetic character in the whole show gets I-have-no-mouth-and-I-must-scream-ed and this is presented as a good thing.
>despite all this the show ends with the psychopathic main characters literally not having achieved anything long-term because all the circumstances that led to the emergence of the fiend still exist

And all this for what? The characters do not change, society does not change, and there are no identifiable themes, except maybe that genocide and child murder is good actually. It's not even enjoyable as turn-your-brain-off slop because all the main characters are such pathetic cucks.
