New alt-lit agitprop just dropped lads.

Somone was asking the other day if everyone had forgotten about Mixtape Hyperborea, well here he is now
>IF ANYONE HAS THE ABILITY to make literature cool among young men again, it might be Reinspects.
>Twenty-six, handsome, and charming, I got the impression he was sleeping with half the girls at the party, though he claims it’s only two. He insists we meet in a cemetery — “It’s a good place to think” — and we chat sitting in the front row of his black 1997 Ford Mustang. “I used to have a nicer car,” Reinspects says. “A 2020 Camaro. But I totaled it doing donuts.” He smokes three hand-rolled cigarettes over our hour-long chat. Prior to moving to L.A., he bummed around Paris for several months. “The greatest tragedy of my life is that I’m not European.” When he notices a headstone engraved with the name “Macbeth,” he immediately breaks into the “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow…” soliloquy that closes the play.
>Reinspects is cagey about his personal details. Reinspects is a pen name — a lot of alt-lit writers use pen names — and he refuses to tell me specifics about his life, other than to say he’s from the Southwest, is the son of Slavic immigrants, and went to a Waldorf school, a “child-centered” educational philosophy that emphasizes a child’s holistic well-being. In 2020, he graduated from a state university with a political science degree. He only lets me photograph him from the neck down to avoid getting “face doxxed.”
I hate this fat chungus world we live in
why do presumably left wing establishment writers always stoop to these levels?

A European is serious, which is why every act of irony is obvious and a relief before taking on another responsibility.
An American is constantly frivolous, which is why he has trouble finding balance in life and is therefore constantly afraid. Irony in the US therefore results from fear, but also causes fear. This is, among other things, why Americans are so neurotic.

Reads like a parody, to get the male audience today you first self publish it in webnovel form and if it gets traction you start a patreon and then you get it professionally edited and release it on amazon and audioshit. Weird. I met the journo who wrote this piece at that New Ritual party. Talked to him for a good chunk of the night actually. I went with some friends adjacent to the scene because I wanted to date one of the e-girls in attendance. Just glancing over this piece now, he really seems to have missed the point. For starters, if he were a good writer he would have honed in a lot more on the inherent comedy of the night. That propane tank falling into the fire pit and nearly exploding just being a footnote is an insane waste. One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. All the theatrics of that night rang uncanny in such a hilarious way.
Otherwise, I feel like the entire narrative is so forced. I sincerely don't see much that's reactionary about this scene; I say this as someone who is legitimately right wing and who wishes that it WERE more so. But it's not. It's quite literally just the same grouping of nihilists reading their masturbemoirs to each other as have always been. Maybe they say "retard" or pay lip service to some BAP talking point from 7 years ago, but it's all the same as it ever was. Just bored well off twenty somethings chasing drugs and pussy and fame while writing about not much at all. I don't want to be harsh here, but he mentions that Classy Fred Blassy girl reading shakespeare. What he omits is her fatly prattling on about her SSRI use with the exact same tone, cadence, and ethos as Lena Dunham in 2013. Pegas features here. He's a nice guy, I only talked to him once. But he's just a slightly younger Mike Ma in my estimation. Unironically the only good writer on display that night WAS Omar King, whom McDermmott does a MASSIVE disservice to. No John, we were not laughing at the invocation of the naughty no no slurs. We were laughing because Omar wrote a legitimately funny, strange story in the vein of Flannery O'Connor-- but you were too concerned with his "neurodivergence" and ethnicity. Very midwit appraisal of the night. Disappointing to say the least.

>>24530128Yeah, it doesn't strike me as anything special, having seen the same kind of thing in my city across the continent. Fresh faces convinced they and their friends are the new taste-makers, where the insularity of it might incubate a handful of good writers but also puts some dogshit (or simply under-developed) writers on the same stage. Get them all to dress nice and the photo coverage will be fine though.
I don't think these kinds of scenes are bad, just a little naive, and probably a decent stepping-stone for some.
>>24530176I'd kind of like to get more involved in the scene but I feel like my writing isn't ready to be shared quite yet. But then again it does seem that a lot of the people who d read aren't particularly good either. Probably a good way to meet girls
All the faggots itt talking about meeting whores ffs get a clue
Do I have to move to the coasts to get involved in this sort of stuff? The most "literary scene" action I ever got was when I lived in New York City for a while. I was part of an actual novelist's writing group, met some cool people. These modern scenes seem simultaneously ridiculous and intriguing. Like, I can tell all these Dimes Square type people are really talentless poseurs, but they seem fun to hang around in a limited capacity.
>>24530294It's probably not the only literary group in your area, and not the only people willing to be irreverent.

>>24532005Basically there was a really active group on /lit/ publishing and shilling their books here. The editor of & said it was like a /lit/ renaissance, in the sense of a renaissance on /lit/, but certain members of the group interpreted that to mean a full-blown literary renaissance, and other members of the group felt compelled to own that label once it started getting pushed on the actual board. Most of the Leftists in their long march are foxes. They rule by guile, cunning, and infiltration.
But that only works when you can act in stealth and secret, with nobody noticing you. When the spotlight is, suddenly, upon you, you can't operate that way because you'll be met with open resistance. You have to be a lion, basically, in those circumstances, and foxes can't transform themselves into lions.
Leftists basically don't have an answer to the prospect of getting their bones broken. Not even the antifa types, really, they're used to causing trouble unopposed versus being met in an open fight. They're terrorists, not warriors.

>>24534953I think the problem with this analogy is that the right has had to become even more subversive and practice more guile than the left over the last 15 years.
Leftists get their opinions from mass media, they trust mass media more than the right. So where are the right wing coming from? totally underground initiatives.
Leftists are completely out in the open, the right still relies on anonymous accounts to spread ideology. A lot of right wing Twitter accounts just copy everything from 4chan so the whole movement is rooted in anonymity.
I think it works like
The left can label themselves as leftist just fine, but their actions are repulsive

>>24536924>You’d think there’d be more variety. They aren't very creative, first of all, because creatives create. They don't usually go around trying to start "movements" because they're busy with their work. Oftentimes when they do, it usually happens as a consequence of their creations taking off in popularity.
There's also the religious liberal problem of needing to conform hard with orthodoxy, so, this limits how far they can push the envelope and actually be subversive and shocking. Revolutionary art challenges the sensibilities and orthodoxies of the society in which it was made. Catcher in the Rye, for example, challenged American society and the "American Dream" by calling it all fake posturing for the sake of putting on appearances. 'Alt-Lit' kids can't do that, because they're true believers in the modern liberal world order, and to challenge it would go against everything they have ever held to be true. It's the appearance of radicality with none of the substance, hence, boring.

>>24534953Both sides of the political spectrum have sort of painted themselves into a rhetorical corner and can't get out of it. With the left it's obvious, they want to be righteous crusaders against oppression but can't admit that they've become an entrenched bureaucratic behemoth in government and entertainment and frequently rely on brute force or social pressure to try and intimidate their opponents.
The right also tends to be hypocritical, in that they idolize strength, power, and self-assurance and want to portray themselves as paragons of these virtues, but generally speaking neoliberalism has eroded the foundation of individual power until it's now rare to see anyone work their way to prosperity and happiness. Look at the main characters of Harassment Architecture or Mixtape Hyperborea, they're both successful wealthy chads who have no trouble getting laid and portray themselves as effortlessly sidestepping the social conventions that hamstring everyone else. The authors are both handsome prep school kids who can just bum around and waste their time writing books while their social reject audience slogs through another day as a fulfillment associate at the globohomo slaveworks.
I forgot where I was going but my point is that I'd like to see a genuinely honest right wing book. Mixtape was good but it felt inauthentic to the average experience of the modern right-winger who only ever experiences true satisfaction vicariously through a screen. I remember there were a few tries back in the old /crit/ threads, tons of stories about bitter, isolated young men working dead-end jobs at fast food places but I vaguely recall that they also seemed to lack substance or honesty in some way.
>>24526652They are insecure
>>24543381What is needed is for a lot of things to just get broken. Politically, economically, culturally. The entire ecosystem of the modern West has become impossible to maneuver in, and needs a good shakeup. It needs someone to take a sledgehammer and smash it into a million pieces. Many things in the world today need to be broken, and broken beyond all hope of repair.
Isn't this the only sensible reason to ever have supported Trump? Not for this or that policy reason but in his capacity as a Destroyer. To break things, break BIG things, even without doing it on purpose. That was always the logic in it for me. Because for the good of many people, many things need to be broken.
>>24543921That combined with the insensible reasons. Anyone paying attention knew he would win again.
>>24526976I mean, transgenderism was always kinda philosophically right-leaning if you think about it. It's just that on an instinctual level most rightists are too xenophobic and disgust motivated to care. Nobody is more obsessed with upholding traditional ideas of gender and sexuality than trans people. They just want the traditional roles opposite to what they were born into.
>>24544275you're, like, one step into the concept. there are more steps to take, but i agree plenty of trans people never make them. this is all a result of the rather conservative structuring of society and it affects cis and trans alike.
>>24544275That's ridiculous. The idea that you can arbitrarily decide you're a different gender than the one you're born into is not right-wing at all. There's nothing "traditional" about it.
>>24543381>Mixtape was good but it felt inauthentic to the average experience of the modern right-wingerSo? I took it as sort of an idealised teenager in an idealised world. You get a glimpse of his frustrations (some stuff early on about his parents being cheapskates about cereal, how his buddies aren't happy for him that he got a BJ), but it's way more about stitching together a series of vignettes of adolescence. The risks and dangers are all child-sized and resolve within their respective chapters, and the protagonist never really aspires to be anything but just is. The perfect quip. The perfect routine. The unabashed love of his friends. It makes it unrealistic, but it allows the story to be an ideal and maybe feel closer to the positive parts of what it is to be a kid: struggles that end when the school day is over, terrifying things you bounce back from, risks that are only risks because you're a kid who doesn't know anything, friendships you don't have to work for. If you try to just remember the good parts of ages 10-18, then blur out the in-between and embellish them a bit, that's sort of what the book felt like.
There's a little more to it in the protagonist and his seafaring dream, and throwing in the term Hyperborean if you want to call that a dogwhistle or something, but I really read it as humourous and unfettered nostalgia 99%. Bear in mind Adem is apparently 26, and the book is about a high school senior in 2007, so he deliberately chose a setting that he didn't grow up in to write about. I don't think there's anything terrifically deep about it beyond choosing pretty well where to be honest; it's the kind of book I immediately wanted to show some of my high school friends. It's easy and it's funny and it brings back some nice memories.
I know at times he's driving at modern flawed masculinity, and I think giving his own idealised account of that is better (or at least still worthwhile) rather than hamfisting a more contemporary or realistic take on the struggle to attain it. If there are any meaningful takeaways, it's to be a homie and to tell your homies you love them, and that's cool enough.
