I hate to break it to you but there isn't a single provable case of a genius with autism in history. A lot of them were definitely cuckoos but clearly didn't have autism as modern science researchs generally tend to all reach the conclusion that autism doesn't give you any kind of superpower (I know I had an argument with somebody over it and we exchanged studies and all of his contradicted their title in the conclusions nobody seems to read).
It really shouldn't be considered to be a superpower because it just pushes societal problems to the side and if there ever was an autistic genius, the hard work he put in to overcome his autism would just be brushed aside

from dsm 5:
>Autism spectrum disorder. Intellectual disability is common among individuals with
autism spectrum disorder. Assessment of intellectual ability may be complicated by social-communication and behavior deficits inherent to autism spectrum disorder, which
may interfere with understanding and complying with test procedures. Appropriate assessment of intellectual functioning in autism spectrum disorder is essential, with reassessment across the developmental period, because IQ scores in autism spectrum disorder may be unstable, particularly in early childhood.

this is a reverse cope. Newton, Kafka, Wittgenstein, Orwell, etc., all come off as having Asperger's if you study their biographies. besides, the idea that "autism" is a superpower is just marketing to describe the tradeoffs that high-functioning autism gives you. you get better at certain kinds of problems, but you get worse at others.
>>24526892
maybe the problem is grouping Asperger's with ASD in general. only then I buy your skepticism, but that is a problem with DSM-V categorizations if anything. but the idea that there was never a genius with at least Asperger's is ridiculous when you look at the evidence.

my take is that you're not going to learn much from any book about autism. either you're of the retarded variety, in which case you probably can't even read, or you're of the 'high-functioning' sort, in which case it will be all too general to apply to your own case. you're better off keeping a journal and trying to understand yourself on your own terms.

Same logic that people on here apply to social stunted individuals they see, instantly talking about how they clearly have autism. Obsessive interests, difficulty in social relationships, and problems communicating is what most recluses have. And the geniuses who dedicated their lives to their crafts are instantly called autistic with absolutely zero scientific evidence (still waiting for that modern day autistic genius to pop up).

>Falk's theories, although highly speculative (as she herself admits), are logical and intriguing. My only major point of contention with Falk's central hypothesis is that it assumes, without caveat or much explanation, that the genetic variants that contribute to AS and HFA confer specific cognitive strengths that were, and continue to be, adaptive and selected for in human evolution. While repetitive behaviors, narrow, specific interests, and sociobehavioral impairments are well-defined characteristics of ASD, including AS and HFA, evidence for enhanced abilities in specific cognitive domains is currently more anecdotal than scientific, and the proportion of AS and HFA individuals that possess these traits is unknown. Furthermore, the evo–devo trends Falk links to AS are true of ASD more generally, and recent data from the CDC estimates that roughly 30% of individuals with ASD are intellectually disabled. The significance of this cannot be ignored, as intellectual disability only occurs in ~1% of the general population. Perhaps a more plausible, if less exciting, evolutionary explanation for the emergence of ASD is an increasing tolerance for genomic variation in regions underlying brain development and function in humans, which would be necessary for rapid brain evolution, but would also greatly increase vulnerability to neurodevelopmental disorders.

There are plenty of autistic geniuses today. Silicon Valley was built by them. Geniuses are simply less impressive by today's standards because all the low-hanging fruit is gone and there's a lot of ideologically-motivated attacks on the validity of their work.

Actual diagnosed aspy here. By top two books on the subject are “The essential difference” by Simon Baron Cohen and “Reframing your thinking around autism” by Holly Bridges. The books produced by the group Asperger experts are also good but they are self help books for people with Aspergers and not for just learning about the condition. “The Master and His Emissary” by Iain Mcgilchrist isn’t about autism explicitly but it’s frame of right and left brain thinking is very helpful for understanding autistic thought and perspective. It’s also just a very good book in general.

Some other more academic books I would recommend would be the following
>The Neuroscience of Autism Spectrum Disorders (get the 2022 edition if you can)
>the molecular basis of autism
>the polyvagal theory by Stephen Porges
>pic related

Imagine you are one of those brilliant narrow-focused super-autists, who can know everything about a subject and you focus specifically on Star Wars. Yes, you could have been a science major, but in staid you annoy people on wikipedia by writing obscure articles, about this one dirt miner called y'lek'i who lives on dukadukachakchak, who appeared in three comics, a 90's novel and a old star wars MUD game from 1994. What do you mean, irrelevant, it's like le heckin' Star Wars.

All this really boils down to is the appearance vs. reality, symptoms vs. etiology, etc. And your rhetorical strategy boils down to "well, those cases have all the symptoms, but they're just *recluses* (or some other explanation), and they were not actually autistic." Aren't we putting the cart before the horse (for example, why were they recluses?). This is not a productive way to argue, and it is emblematic of shill speak. You can always "explain away" any counterexample by appealing to some magical factor (or non-existence of said factor) that makes the difference between two similarly-presenting cases. But where would be the logic in that? You lose credibility, especially when that is your knee-jerk reaction to each case.

I would rate it badly. I am a total failure. No skills, can’t do anything real, no prospects, nothing to live for. I would have a horrible life right now if I were not lucky enough to have a father that makes decent money that allows me to still live with him. For most autism/Asperger’s is a considerable net negative on their quality of life and anyone who says otherwise is a fraud trying to push an agenda. After my father is no longer able to work I am going to fall into wage slaving poverty and then live a terrible life and then probably die a terrible or pitiful death alone with nothing to show for my existence.

NTA, but I wanted to say that it can be difficult separating your autism from the rest of your personality. I'm a lazy, impotent person, but I feel that I would be quite similar without autism. I do have multiple non-autistic siblings whom I share negative traits with which leads me to believe that I would be similarly fucked without it though. A lot of people told me I was very smart as a kid (like 5-12), and I did well in early grade school, so maybe that was a benefit? Like the other anon, I would view Autism as a net-negative on my life.
