The funniest thing about his creepy, self-help-but-a-tough-guy schtick is, the first thing a man should really do to "grow up" and a "be a man" etc is, is to disregard anything someone who looks like that says
The dichotomy is wild to me, he lectures people about being grown ups, said people are willing to unquestioningly do what a stranger on a youtube video says, are, by definition, not adults yet

It is precisely because I have grown up that I feel the need for escapism. If you're happy and content with the way the world is, you are not an adult, you're an ignorant child.

Have been reading Stoner for the past 3 hours, stopped at the chapter 11
>He had come to that moment in his age when there occurred to him, with increasing intensity, a question of such overwhelming simplicity that he had no means to face it. He found himself wondering if his life were worth the living; if it had ever been.
And the next paragraph is
>It was winter, and a snow had fallen during the day, so that the out-of-doors was covered with a white softness. The office was overheated; he opened a window beside the desk so that the cool air might come into the close room. He breathed deeply, and let his eyes wander over the white floor of the campus. On an impulse he switched out the light on his desk and sat in the hot darkness of his office; the cold air filled his lungs, and he leaned toward the open window. He heard the silence of the winter night, and it seemed to him that he somehow felt the sounds that were absorbed by the delicate and intricately cellular being of the snow. Nothing moved upon the whiteness; it was a dead scene, which seemed to pull at him, to suck at his consciousness just as it pulled the sound from the air and buried it within a cold white softness. He felt himself pulled outward toward the whiteness, which spread as far as he could see, and which was a part of the darkness from which it glowed, of the clear and cloudless sky without height or depth. For an instant he felt himself go out of the body that sat motionless before the window; and as he felt himself slip away, everything—the flat whiteness, the trees, the tall columns, the night, the far stars—seemed incredibly tiny and far away, as if they were dwindling to a nothingness. Then, behind him, a radiator clanked. He moved, and the scene became itself. With a curiously reluctant relief he again snapped on his desk lamp. He gathered a book and a few papers, went out of the office, walked through the darkened corridors, and let himself out of the wide double doors at the back of Jesse Hall. He walked slowly home, aware of each footstep crunching with muffled loudness in the dry snow.
So yeah, I wouldn't mind some escapism

Grow up is the trad fantasy of rejecting consumerism by buying into the very product of society turning into a consumer society: the 50s fantasy. Wife, kids, dog, car, a house and a steady job. Earning lots of money so you can spend it on fancy newfangled consumer goods like washing machines, and why just stop at one car? Buy a new one every year. Have two.
Amazingly they never once confront the dissonance between their idealized existence and the supposed message of eschewing shallow consumer culture and “escapism”. Who do they think bought the boob tubes and planted their kids in front of them?

There’s a very fascinating psychological problem ongoing in these minds. You don’t even need this realization about the birth of consumer culture to notice it, since all of these people will hawk crap on their podcasts and lectures every single time. From books to rugs to more courses on how you should live life. Extra cherry for manly man products for idiots. Buy a mangrate and a soap that smells like tar. Get VPN so you can pirate more entertainment.
The contradictions do not wake the zombies that listen to these people.

It's really sad. He is so close to entering the truth, but refuses to move beyond his generalizations. He is the reason I became a believer in the first place. I believe at one point he genuinely wanted the truth, but now he's trapped in his sophisms. All it would take is one bold Christian to challenge him genuinely to stop hiding behind his language games and truly believe in Christ. He is so close, but the gate is narrow that leads to life.

Then again, who am I to judge, I am a worthless sinner.

>is that a yes?
>it's a process, not a status.
>do you believe in Heaven and Hell?
>we live them out psychologically. Every day.
>that’s not what the Bible says.
>well, the Bible isn’t a manual. It’s a narrative architecture of meaning.
>are you afraid of going to Hell?
>i’m more afraid of becoming the kind of person who belongs there.
>do you think atheists can be moral?
>hat depends what you mean by “moral,” and whether they're standing on borrowed ethical capital.
>borrowed from what?
>from Judeo-Christian metaphysics. From millennia of cultural evolution.
>so they’re moral, but for the wrong reasons?
>they’re moral, but they don’t know why.
>so you’re better than them?
>no, but I may be more aware of the foundations.
>so why not just say you're a Christian?
>because I’m not willing to trivialize that claim.
Fedoras mad.

Except you can say you believe in God the same way you believe 2+2=4 (i.e. as an abstract but fundamental truth) AND acknowledge that you're a Christian. Peterson is unwilling to admit either claim.

Sure. What's wrong with that? If I was asked I'd reply that I don't know, but if I was really expected to address it, I'd also begin trying to specify what we mean by belief and God. How else can you answer if you hold any position but a simple yes or no? That's how I try to get down to the questions and answers by myself, too. And if I had an audience, then I would make damn sure I get to explain exactly what I think and not with hairsplitting and excruciating detail.

>fiction stops having any value past a certain age because... because it just does okay?
None of this would be happening if the media in question wasn't being produced within a system that considers juvenile media a category something is relegated to rather than occupying in its own right. Nothing is "for children" anymore because being "childish" is a byword for "can't be bothered to try". Some of you people genuinely believe Tolkein is a failure because you can't tell the difference between the Silmarillion and Bluey.

why doesnt JP just explain what he means by "do" and "you" and "believe" etc. etc. rather than keep asking the question back providing a total non-answer? he could simply say "no, i don't believe in God in the traditional sense" and THEN you can immerse yourself deeper in the the topic at hand.

People don't realise Peterson's "high verbal IQ word vomit retreat into semantics" is actually him trying to Mr. Miyagi you. He's teaching you the way he thinks rather than a direct answer to a question that isn't actually relevant to improving your life or reaching a collective truth. Showing the process rather than giving the answer.

>"what do you mean by 'believe'?"
>most people don't know what they even mean with the words they use, he won't "answer" because he wants to be genuinely precise with his speech to be in line with the Logos. he understands the importance of language and belief deeper than most.

I think people take all these categorisations and semantics too literally. he's essentially saying; "it doesn't matter what you TELL yourself you believe, merely by existing and having a basic ethical code, you are unconsciously acting out Christian ethics and stories. God is the interplay between conscience and calling. The act of voluntary self sacrifice can be found in all religions, all the questions you ask as irrelevant to the actual POINT i'm trying to make, you're just trying to gotcha me for youtube clout because you're obsessed with discrediting my character from a preconceived bias woke mind virus."

It's also just temperament and levels of consciousness. like the Dawkins debate. if you don't get it, you just won't get it.

Peterson will touch a nerve by simply pointing out something that is blatantly ignored in the way an ideological group frames an issue. He exposes ideological blind spots in a simple and straightforward way; this leads to the fellow travelers of whichever idea is being discussed having a breakdown and exposing themselves. He's valuable as a media personality if even for that reason alone.

>Peterson: it would be productive to involve men in the conversation about violence against women in a way that doesn't label masculinity as inherently negative
>Libtard: so you're saying in order to make men care about rape women have to be returned to the status of men's property
>Peterson: the rise of identitarianism is linked to reactionary politics that sublimate personal resentment into collectivistic extremism
>Chud: so you're saying white people don't have group interests and therefore shouldn't exist
>Peterson: transgender ideology specifically targets a group of people likely to be confused and open to mental pathologies via social contagion--we shouldn't give hormones to children let alone surgically mutilate minors
>Tranny: so you're literal nazi saying we're a disease and we should be exterminated like one
>Peterson: anonymity increases the likelihood of pathological behavior so perhaps one way to alleviate the negative repercussions of its overall influence would be to segregate accounts on these specific widely used social media websites--it's definitely better than secret and selective control of the public narrative as it exists now
>/pol/tard: so you're saying you want everyone everywhere to be tied to whatever they say and do at all times...I'm a freedom fighter [goes to another thread to post about AOC's asshole while writing "nig*er" 50 times]
