'YHWH Who Came Down From The Mountains" was the patron deity of the Amorites, likely based on an ancient culture memory of an erupting volcano (cf. the Exodus narrative of a pillar of flame guiding the Jews). This nomadic tribe entered Canaan, adopted their generic word "Elohim" for their polytheistic religion, and launched a crusade against other temples to institute monotheistic worship. The Bible as a text exists as propaganda to retcon this history so that Canaanites+Amorites were always one people (Jews) and that anyone who worshiped non-YHWH deities are understood to be exterminated.
