I read the earlier ones as they came out, and this will kind of date me, I was maybe between 3rd and 5th grade. The target audience was maybe a couple years older than me, and I missed a lot of references I think as a reader in a small American town who thought boarding schools were a fairy tale thing.
I read maybe the first five, after that I don't know how much was me just growing older and losing interest in Boxcar Children-tier literature, and how much was the books just becoming harder and harder to immerse in. I've seen other people who did pay more attention draw out some of the plot holes that made it obvious how the later books' plot just wasn't planned at all, but even then it's like pointing out all the plot holes in Animorphs. It's a bunch of silly kids' books, not a defining epic, and the college aged kids (mostly girls of course) getting so into them was always a bit embarrassing. Especially when they sang out "I didn't just watch the movies, I read the books!" as if reading fairy tales about schoolchildren targeted at schoolchildren was equivalent to a PhD.

The book is also incredibly derivative of a couple other children's book series, The Worst Witch and Groosham Grange, both about Witch themed boarding schools. The first chapter of Harry Potter honestly reads like someone paraphrasing the first chapter of Groosham Grange.

She's just a product of Thatcherite Britain. She isn't a chud and is actually extremely liberal, but she was raised by a generation who still had the traditional British prejudices and cultural values that are now viewed as problematic. She's a relic of a post-Empire Britain that wasn't in decline as much as it is today, and the classical, folklore rich world of Harry Potter encapsulates this. And the economy of the Wizard world matches pretty well with the Thatcherite consumerism she lived through at her peak when the British economy wasn't in tatters and completely dependent on foriegn trade.
