The cover of the book is author writing it.

This passage is where I learned the word "isthmus" from (when I was like 16).

Read the Skeleton Key, drop the excuse of "but it's gibberish" (you haven't read it so you are assuming), put in an ounce of fucking effort as a reader for one miserable fucking time in your faggot life, and you'll be immensely rewarded with one of the best books you'll ever read. Will you understand all of it at once? No. I myself still don't understand all of it, and I may never. But like you I used to think it was obtuse gibberish not worth my time, now it is my favorite book ever written, period.

Doing an initial reading of this I thought it was referring poetically to a specific body of water which transitioned into speaking of a captain who arrived for a war, but then the rest got really fucking confusing.

If, as you say, do not understand the book you're reading, how is it your favourite book? Why do you like it?

This says more about you than it does about Joyce.

It's not a book for plebs. Stay in your lane, sonny.

I understand SOME of it, not ALL of it. I like it because almost every single word is its own little universe. It's a dense, fecund book. It's the most epic/mythological thing I've ever read, it feels grander than religious texts, even. And when you "translate" the prose you can see how great it is, it mogs Ulysses and Ulysses is itself a masterpiece but this is on another level. Seriously get the skeleton key and give it a shot anon, you will not be disappointed.

it's meant to be read like that anon so you can understand the "music" or whatever of his writing
there's even audio of Joyce himself reading it
