>>24547354>What is Web Novel General?A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royalroad, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more
>Why read web novels? Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.
>Why write web novels?Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See https://graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Would you break free from the clout hierarchy?
Then write in the land of slop, with your hand.
Would you trade fame for raw honesty,
Then rise with the Slop Guild and stand.

When they stand x2
And in hand x2
That's a power, that's power
That must rule in webfiction land

>>24551329NTA but I think a shifting POV would be best, like you start with the "MC" trying to off himself, so we get why he wants to do it in his own words, and so we're presented the problem of not being able to die. This creates anticipation.
Then we shift to the demon king, who is the actual protagonist, and we realize that the first chapter was in the pov of the recklessly suicidal antagonist.
Maybe the demon king's motive is that the MC DID manage to isekai and was largely invulnerable, but he was very annoying and insufferable to the point where the demon king rolled back time to before he died, so he keeps him from dying so he never has to deal with him. It could be very funny if the demon king was the straight man of the situation.

Worm is core reading because of how it set the stage as the first major webnovel
I think japanese light novels should be considered canon because of how the entire litRPG/progression fantasy genres derive from them. I'm not really well enough read there or know the history of who inspired who well enough to say what is core reading here. to throw out some options from my limited knowledge:
Re:Monster (edgy and pretty bad but I remember reading it on /a/ as the translations were coming out and I think it was the first of its kind)
Kumo Desu Ga Nani Ka (the first example I can think of a dungeon monster focused story)
Infinite Dendrogram (it's downstream of things like sword art online and log horizon but it's the only VRMMO slop I can think of that I found good)
The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor (not japanese but korean and I've only read the manhwa but I understand it to be influential. the titular root of Royalroad's name)
there are probably also fanfics that should be counted but it's not a scene I'm acquainted with at all. My Immortal is an iconic cornerstone of fanfics. the only fanfic I've read is Fallout Equestria and though I consider it pretty good I don't know if it belongs in a theoretical canon for web novels
>>24551491isekai != progression fantasy
For me? I'd never give a bad public rating even if I don't believe in positivity-only echo chambers either. Outright disendorsements just rarely feel necessary. It's not like warning the public against an unqualified electrician who exploded my house. Even if something is total dogshit, I don't feel motivated to give a shitty rating either. Maybe it's just me but at some point, a really low rating isn't constructive feedback anymore.
>>24551510I don't rate/review anything ever, because the odds are 99% only a bitter chimpout will follow your feedback isn't full on dicksucking. But the fact is, perfection doesn't exist, and I'm not going to pretend some total amateur's anime fanfic is worth even 4 stars.
>>24551510I'd only rate a 5 or a .5 desu senpai
5 as a default as a way to support an author who's work I enjoy or a .5 as a supreme act of spite because of some theoretical scenario where the story rug pulls me and turns into political propaganda or something

I'll be honest, lads.
Most of the work I've seen posted here just isn't very good. Some other web novel/writing communities I've visited do have a much lower floor but also a higher general average and higher ceilings.
>>24551568I'm going to write either the best or the worst web novel you've ever seen. You will be entertained regardless.

>>24551568>Most of the work I've seen posted here just isn't very good. And? This general is like one and a half months old, give it some time. The cream of the crop is yet to be made.
>>24551574That's not what I'm saying. More accurately, the stuff I've read here is middling quality whereas in some communities, there are clearly a few writers far ahead of the pack
>>24551581Like I said in my post, the floor out there is significantly lower. I've just yet to see anything noteworthy here
>>24551593This is a fair response. Both web novels and this general are in their infancy for sure
>>24551601you didn't only say that the floor is lower but that the general average is lower which is not at all the case when 80% of writers are writing barely comprehensible babble, not even worthy being of called slop
we don't have anything outstanding but the average is wayyyy higher just by virtue of not being flooded by complete drek
>>24551568I'm sorry. I hope my next work is better and can meet your standards.
I think it an interesting phenomenon that we anons are alive, at this time, at what seems to be the crux of when the barely nascent webnovel scene begins to finally become, in a sense.
As an aside, do most readers on RoyalRoad strictly subscribe to a diet of Sandersonian pseudo-Californian prose, or can they tolerate and might even enjoy more ornate prose.
>>24551460Schizophrenia is simply God's gift to see beyond the veil, don't hate
>>24551628Yes, and I enjoy when stories have more ornate prose. The only thing that's important for web novels is that it's accessible to anyone. Strike a balance and try to avoid overly complex language and metaphors.
>>24551601>Both web novels and this general are in their infancy for sureI'm sure there's an anon here typing away at his backlog, who will find glorious succes in this new age of slop.
>>24551641hey hey that's literally me haha
>>24551639It also just works against you. I love beautifully written and complex prose, with awe inspiring sentences that almost make you jealous with how well they are constructed, but for a webnovel with 500.000 words? Yeah no fuck that. Give me something that is "easy" to read.
I think it is best to create a flowy writing style that makes both reading and writing a joy. Not thoughtless garbage, but not something that will exhaust you either.
which genres are undersupplied but in demand? asking for a friend
>>24551645Oh I absolutely agree. The way I see it is that with a typical novel sometimes you may pause to think about what the author is trying to convey and tease out the meaning. With a web novel you should be able to continue reading without needing to think about the meaning because it was given to you in an easily digestible way. Dress up the meaning, make it pretty, make it overly descriptive at times to really push the emotion you want to push. But also, don't overdo it because people want to see movement and not be bogged down in details constantly. It's a balance. At least that's how I see it.
>>24551639>>24551645Do you think prose that, while ornate, is quick to digest and is remarkably vibrant like Howards would do well on RR? Or is prose like that too similar to the em-dash spam, machine gun one-word-sentence staccato of AI writing for people to enjoy?
>>24551657NTA but I think writing like Howard could be a good fit. Web novels are the pulp of today
You'll probably still need to dial back some of the ornateness and err more on the side of even easier reading though.
>>24551646Old-school fedoracore UrbFan aimed at guys is making a slow but certain comeback.
Space Opera has a small niche but loyal niche.
Schizotech Post-post apoc i.e stuff where the world has begun to heal and poorly understood ancient tech lives alongside pastoralist or piratical simpler lifestyles. Granny is a simple cheese & sausage merchant but the glowing box in her backyard provides power if you put water in it and when you ride your heirloom flyer to the academy you see vast sprawls of scorched earth getting reclaimed by Vegetation, making you wonder what weapons from The World Before could cause such devastation.
>>24551657Prose is always inately subjective. Not to say that there aren't differences in quality but I vehemently believe that some forms of prose just don't jive with some people. There are so many normies on the internet that would call anything with the slightest hint of verbosity purple prose, as if the only thing they read are cookbooks and popslop articles, yet a lot people seem to agree with them for whatever fucking reason.
The main problem WN's face is that consistently complex writing is going to be very tiresome very quickly, and as a writer that will eat away at you if you want to keep up with the uploading schedule required to make it in the scene.
>niggas be like hey lemme emulate this master of the genre real quick
>>24551657>>24551639>>24551628If there's no scene you create it.

>>24551701>my main literary inspiration is Clark Ashton Smithi think i’m going to go insane if i try to write prose like his for over 500 chapters.
>>24551702You need to Clancymaxx.
Now THIS is an interesting and potentially self-masturbatory topic to talk about.
Which (presumably trad) authors have inspired your writing the most? If 5 star reviews compliment your writing as being reminiscent of someone, which names being mentioned would have you jumping for joy?
Anyone else feel like the latest TWI chapters have been overly horny?
I liked the original Mating Rituals chapters and the comments every now and then about characters sleeping with each other and whatnot
But lately it feels kinda forced idk
Also thank fucking god the Palace of Fate arc is over, the last chapters have been a pretty decent return to normal although at some moments I was starting to lose interest with the weird seemingly meaningless tangents
Like why do we care about that Earl that meets with the Erribathe King
Or the whole first half of the last Toren chapter, that's like the fifth time we go over the "introduction" to the New Lands and its problems with mana etc
I blame the discord "editors" and beta readers clique slurping up whatever the author comes up with

>>24551923>Third the review itself admits of just being mad at me writing here.>Unfortunately, I have to agree with Blas on this one. I tried to get through chapter one and it was a chore and a half. The first chapter has a word count of 4,366 and yet very little happens. Starting off with a magical infodump then straight into an extended internal monologue is a good way for readers to drop it right away. The multiple fakeouts aren't cute, they're annoying. It kills immersion for readers when there's no stakes. The bloated sentences, excessive metaphor and purple prose are also hard to swallow since it's massively off-putting. Jacques/Rinaldo are smug (and not the Charismatic kind) and too verbose of a narrator to care about since they have no actual flaws (the mild imposter syndrome doesn't count). Also, he's unusually passive. The dialogue? They don't talk like people, which again, kills reader investment. You clearly put a lot of effort and thought into this (the world maps, the obvious multiple drafts (which at minimum to be around 5 revisions, the magic/political system), but this just isn't it. Show some editorial restraint and focus on entertaining readers, since most of us aren't looking for the next literary LitRPG masterpiece, just something that's easy to read and entertaining with relatable characters.Where?

>since most of us aren't looking for the next literary LitRPG masterpiece, just something that's easy to read and entertaining with relatable characters.I find this to be very unfair, what if someone wants to put their next masterpiece on RR? People are free to put their writing there, and it's up to the readers to see if it's their type of book or not. It would be like reading a lit classic and going

>>24552034There will be no beauty in this world as long as jelly people like this dude exist.
How long can I get away with a fake out protagonist before replacing him with the real one? My intuition tells me readers will feel betrayed if it lasts longer than the first chapter, but I want to go a bit longer to make it have a bigger impact. I'm just worried that the average reader for a serial would be against that type of storytelling, either because they feel the early chapters are pointless because of it or because they want to stick with the original character.
>>24552018This part stood out to me too, though I also warned F-anon sometime ago that his plainspoken litrpg summary and title would betray his own prose. This user very likely was somebody browsing for easy action litrpg and got baited by F-anon's litrpg-centered tags and blurb, but when he entered the first chapter he got hit in the head by a brick of polysyllabic subversion and was aggrieved for being caught in a proverbial rat trap and wrote that review as an unconscious form of vindication.
VILLAIN ORIGINS: This story follows the rise to power of this setting's main villain. Although Rinaldo isn't a real villain at the start, he will act as a morally gray character, committing whatever actions are necessary to achieve his goals. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
A VAST CAST OF CHARACTERS: Each narrative arc will spotlight a different protagonist, with the MC appearing as a secondary character, a background one, or even as the main villain.
SCHOOL SETTING: Expect magic lessons, teenage drama, and even a unique fantasy sport. However, more than half of the story takes place outside the academy because the MC frequently skips his classes.
NO HAREM: That said, there will be multiple love triangles with only one featuring the MC.
SLOW PROGRESSION: World war by Chapter 37.
IMMENSE WORLDBUILDING: With over 2,000 years of recorded history and more than 10,000 years of mythology, this story spans three continents, each unique in culture, religion, and magic-system. (See the Map)

My last warning to you, you're going to get yourself banned with this behavior. Instead of Review swapping to make up for the bad one, or suck someone's dick for one, you attack this person who didn't like your work.
If you plan on making it through the "RR" community, you better change your general demeanor, it's unprofessional. You've “published” your work on this platform, so pertain to it's rules. And stop throwing hissy fits over a review.

When you talk about something, you must assert the reason why you must say it the way you do first place. You're an author too, so you must understand at least a little of the disappointment that comes with a bad review. In the very first(!) thread where we had a unified list of writers in the OP, you called someone Royal Road user a tranny while linking their work here, left a childish rating and comment of your own on their work, insisted their review was written by Chatgpt, threatened to spam your cover(?) in every thread going forward, and now there’s a chance a RR moderator might have seen that rentry and lumped other people in in your crusade over a bad review?

Clive Cussler, Westlake (wrote Parker series), and the list of ultra successful authors goes on and on... that personally endorse this (dead) author and his style. Famous authors have been emulating this guys paperback style, and putting their own spin on it? Since the 50s.
True story. Old woman, retired teacher, big reader. She smiled and listened to my whole long diatribe. What I was writing, how I was working on plot and style. SHE said several of "my" authors? Were endorsing HER author she recommended I take a read at. She was sweet, but very insistent.
I reed all three given books, and was very impressed.
Yeah. I could just SEE it.
This guy's style? Was all through my Parker novels, my Dirk Pitt Cusslers I liked as a teen, and others.
PIC RELATED
When your favorite authors *all* point to this one author, as the inspiration and why they started writing? You pay attention. Especially when the guys style and work? Was prolific, long lived, and financially successful.
I have to adopt some style, why not this one.

>>24551805>>>24551758>I tried to be as constructive and kind as possible but it feels like I pissed on his ambitions and dreams now.>That and I'm second guessing myself about not reading carefully enough.I have two things...
thing 1 - any review, of anything. First, list e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g they did correctly, or well enough. If you can;t find corrct things, you have no business as a reviewer. Anyone can play critic. But a real critic? If you aspire to be one, that is. You *must* have the insight to see what is correct, and list it all. I don't care how damn *basic* you have to go.
Then, you have to compliment them on the things they did well, or well enough to get going. Now? You've raised th pirits of the person getting reviewed. They're reading along, interested.
NOW, you can begin to list problems. Things I would work on, are this, that, and the other.
And honetly, after a lot of thought? I recommend this.
we all give 5 stars when reviewing, no exceptions. BUT... we *do* a review, as I listed above.
They got their 5 stars.
"we" all "supported" each other.
The r-e-a-l review? Is there to read.
Everyone wins this way.
Writers? Get their incubation support they need to get started.
Reviewers? Can go *nuts* listing all the faults.
Because guys... we're up against an 8-headed frankenstein monster. Women, POC, Trannies... all marching through the institution we love (publishing) and we n-e-e-d to stick together.
=================================
Thing 2 --- are we talking about anon that always posts his "sled winter" story he's working on? The one with the cunt mother, and the priestess daughter?
If so... man, lay off that sperg. I like him, its entertaining. When the "sled" beginning gets posted each time? I look. I think of it as if... he "blesses the thread" with his (now obligatory) sled story.
(and one of these days, I'm going to rewrite the first chapter he kept posting, see if anyone thinks I can edit)

Harem. I know the word. WN stuff? Is all new tome, however.
If a character falls in with a female domination girlfriend. And, she and her cousin? Share all boyfriends. Now he has two dommy-mommy's. As they pick the third and fourth "girlfriend" to add to their little fun weekends... is this writing "harem slop"? I mean without me knowing the WN term harem from coming here.
(or does the girl have to magically grow a four foot dick, like in some silly anime PNG's I see on here sometime.)
