The seeds and roots and shoots have grown too wild, too brambled, too deep to ever be found and brought back together. The story is now as its widest crest before its supposed conclusion but the act of "bringing the shoots home" is beyond any aged authors capability. Perhaps if George was given another hundred years of health and energy he could do it. But the story he created is destined to live on, undone.

It was pretty obvious with books 4 and 5 that GRRM wasn't sure where the plot was going. Even as late as book 5 of 7 he was introducing new storylines and characters. Where did he expect to find the time to resolve those storylines in a satisfying way?

His ending is a better written version of the shows ending (Danny goes crazy and burns down kings landing) and after seeing every liberal white woman on the interment collectively seethe about how “regressive” and “sexist” it was his boomer hippie ass can’t bring himself to release the book for fear of being called a fascist.

1. He literally just gave up because it's too overwhelming.

2. He lost the whole manuscript on his shitty DOS computer and lost everything and can't be bothered to start over again

His entire theme was a reconstruction of epic fantasy. All the normal beats (chosen one with Jesus allegory, evil destroys itself) are there, he just used a false protagonist, a slow build and certain PoVs to hide this.
His story then became super popular as a deconstruction or epic fantasy. Further more itnushed in a 15+ year period of deconstruction and subverting expectations. People think of asoiaf as a subversive and deconstruction work. Even the shows attending could work in its original context, but the hack showrunners made it subversive and deconstruction, which ruined it.
Martin is now in an impossible position. To achieve his original intent he has to fight against the public perception ofnthe core structure of his own work. He has to completely change what people think it is, or he will fail. Put floridly, he created a demon by accident and now in order to finish his work he'd have to fight thst demon, and he's old and fat and tired

Best case scenario is: it is finished (ASOIAF not just Winds) but he is too pussy to publish it, so it will be done posthumously, just for the sake of avoiding the criticism he is certain his work will receive.
But why the fuck would we get best case scenario for anything in this fucking timeline, someone else has already given the correct reasoning above.

This is exactly right. Specifically, age is a factor not enough people take into account. Creating and keeping track of a coherent story in a world as complex as ASOIAF is no small task. Keep in mind he wrote those first few books in his 40s. He’s almost 80 now

It pisses me off when people say it's a deconstruction because they always bring up salacious details like the incest and murder then say it's opposed to things like Arthurian Legends, which is them confidently admitting they have never read Morte d'Arthur.

King Arthur cheats on his wife with a woman and unbeknownst to either of them, she's his half sister, then she births Mordred, who later mortally wounds Arthur, making Arthur the father of his own demise through his iniquity. The Knights of the Round Table have a civil war where they butcher each other because Lancelot fucks Arthur's wife. Uther Pendragon kills a man to marry his wife, Merlin disguises him as her dead husband because Uther couldn't wait for the marriage to fuck her and that's how the once and future king was conceived.

Gurm spilled cheese on his harddrive where the sole copy of Winds was saved, and lost about 800-1000 pages about 12 years ago. He never recovered from the loss.

He's written too many unnecessary plot threads that is too much of a hassle to untangle given he's lost his passion for the project. And he knows even if he slogs through it, his fans will reward him with scrutiny and overbearing criticism. He has no will and no incentive.

The "protagonist" loses despite having the moral high ground and dies. It is meant to appear like a deconstruction but reveal itself over time to actually be a reconstruction.
The show runners lacked the subtlety for this and played it straight.

He should just write filler books. Feast and Dance could have been multiple books that specialized in Iron Born politics, Dorne's plots, a hilarious stand alone Cercei novella, Jaime's stand alone novel, Jon's stand alone novel. The dramas of the East. We could be starting on book 4 next instead of 6. The fat man has miscalculated.

It took Goethe 35 years of daily work to finish Faust part 2, and it exhausted his mind and will completely. Not saying asoiaf is high art, but the anons saying he doesn't have it in him are right (Martin is of course no Goethe). I imagine the last two volumes are exponentially more difficult to pull off than the first four, just by virtue of how storytelling (particularly epic storytelling) works.

This is why i never started the book series. It's pretty clear to me he needs a writers room of ASOIAF nerds to read all of his notes and current work, plot all the storylines out on a big white board, he directs the plots which a writing team then does the actual writing, which he then approves.

It's what'll happen after he dies anyway, so he might as well do it now. Also this is what he's been doing for a decade now for the TV show etc. Sitting in a writers room bullshitting, whilst others do the actual work.

It’s very obvious that he’s writing Winter and Spring at the same time and planning a duel-release of some sort. I know you’ll all laugh, but I genuinely believe he’s doing it.
It’s taking him longer because he’s hoping to vastly improve on the show’s ending. He’s vain enough to make everybody wait for it too. He wants his magnum opus to be the literary crown of the 21st century, and an infamous duel-release will secure his legacy.

You’ll all see.
