>>24556003>What is Web Novel General?A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royalroad, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more
>Why read web novels? Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.
>Why write web novels?Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See https://graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Word goal of the day:
>1200 words
Quote of the day:
>"Habit beats talent every single time"
>>24559247maybe he's running the meta of speedrunning to 20k words asap to reach eligibility for RS that a lot of launch guides recommend
the tortoise method makes more sense to me though
>>24559256If you've got backlog then every 12 hours makes way more sense.
Anyone here, just pivoted to sexually gratifying works for attention. Got some good attention on my futa fantasy smut novel, now I'm juggling two pennames and it's exhausting at the moment. Not the workload, but the focus, attention.
Instead of launching a generic slop of a story, I feel I should write something smutty that still falls into royalroad's guidelines and could still be a hit on scribblehub. eh? Not looking for permission or a fix. Just indecisive.
>>24559247>.pngthis got me thinking, how does everyone handle their chapter names (if you have them at all)?
i think single words or slightly longer/more poetic ones can be great
one-dimensional and purely describing what happens like "A Chat with Xiaowei" is shit though
>>24559263I would argue that 8 to 12 hours per day, hourly is the best option, rather than dropping all at once.
>>24559247>>24559280my autism would make me do a chapter every 3 hours so i can get 8 chapters out every 24 hour cycle
>>24559272If I had more energy I'd definitely do the same. Got a pretty simple and 'wholesome' Generation ship smut story outline from my amphetamine abuse days laying around that shocking still holds up.
>>24559272I write sexually gratifying works for relief. Curiously I have a story based on CYOA that is my longest single piece of writing.
>>24559272>just pivoted to sexually gratifying works for attentionI wish i could write so I could do this....
>>24559205 (OP)Fuck the perfect run. I remember reading this hunk of shit like two years ago, after seeing it had the highest rating on lightnovelworld and came away extremely dissatisfied. I then went to the comments to write my 1 star review and saw the author getting all pissy and whining that we werenโt reading it on royal road. After that I decided to never read a western WebNovel again. I mean who do they think they are? They write WebNovels, they arenโt writing the next divine comedy or les miserables. Some people have such arrogance that it astounds me.
>brodude just kabedon'd his co-worker and demanded they start dating
My mind has become pure sloponium.
Read more slop. Not 4chanslop, but something that was (is?) on Rising Stars, thought I might mix it up and see what "success" is. Overworked Otome Gatekeeper.
Despite the title it doesn't really have much to do with that subgenre throughout the entire first volume. There's hints of those tropes, but the usual structure of a engagement annulment and the villainess going her own way, and all the academy stuff after that isn't really here. That aside the sentences are quite good. It's an easy read, and decently interesting, and despite seeming to be proud of the OC donut steel magic system doesn't infodump much about it in the volume (shows restraint). The characters are mostly interesting and have charm, but are odd in that the dialogue repeatedly trends towards extremely serious heart-to-hearts multiple times in the volume. I think it's a little overwrought. My biggest gripe would be that unlike my two fantasy darlings from here, this guy seems to have a way worse grasp on plot. It's a whole bunch of emotional character moments for characters that really haven't done anything yet almost right up to the end when suddenly everything happens back to back. The interlude about the protagonist's father and Royal Guardsmen was actually extremely interesting on its own, perhaps a better story even.
It doesn't rely on tropes much, nor spamming meme tags, and seems to have made it solely due to getting promoted by ??? (I didn't care to look into it) and good workmanship with the writing. Could have been better, the author can write dialogue and emotion but not so much plot. Gonna catch up on Rabbit and Crow now, and the new chapter of Black Sun.
>>24559329I have no idea how people can stomach more than 3 chapters of this drivel
>>24559098If youโre worried about white room, describe the materials used to make items in the room. Set out food and describe the meal theyโre eating to set the tone. They in a tent? What is it made out of? What are the characters wearing, and what can that immediately tell me about the setting?
New chappie of Black Sun out! I hope readers don't pick up how heavily my giant monster fights are inspired from Nightreign
Right, boys. Thinking of a series of episodic stories that combine a harem of monstergirls & "cozy" murder mysteries set in the 1920s where every pulp horror thing is based on true facts.
POV character would be hapless but charming Miskatonic U graduate Howie Craftlove. Haremettes would include a German big titty goth(ic) assistant Eva F, a flatbrat vampire, probably a fae of some sort, and since we like a cheeky joke sometimes there'll be a catgirl for Howie. Eva's there to stay, the others rotate in on a case basis after their initial meet & fuck.

>>24559329I read the first chapter and was invested for 5 mins, thinking is this guy going to actually struggle to win, but no, he pulls an effortless, perfect comeback after restarting once. It already told me enough what kind of story it was going to be, fucking boring.
>>24559205 (OP)The perfect run was correct to be honest, not frustrating enough for me to drop, and I can't say the same for many others
There are many great moments but by the end we can literally feel the author rushing through things
Also the blurb is slightly misleading, we expect a chaotic neutral Mc, but it's chaotic good, then gradually to neutral good. No a deal breaker but I still feel insulted.
And the MC is a Mary Sue, even with time loop power, but I admit that it isn't that obvious when compared to other novels
Won't say much about the romance since it will spoil but it's clearly the worst part of this novel
>>24559400White room is only an issue if the readers think it is issue.
I have talked with many people, and it is interesting how different people's preferences are.
Some expect a certain level of descriptions, while they feel even the smallest visual detail is a mistake.
>>24559400>>24559483The fact of describing everything is that it's a very effective way of padding wordcount. Considering the meta, that's important. Describing the powers is the best of descriptions because the pigs love that slop. That's how Celestial Forge stories get so stupid huge.

>>24559727if you're a black company salaryman reading two chapters a day on the train to and from work, you'll quickly catch up on a story which releases a chapter a week
people value serials as a consistent and reliable presence. the reader stays immersed in the story and gets to enjoy the routine of reading it for as long as there are chapters
nobody wants to invest themselves in something that might randomly get dropped or fall off in quality. being able to confirm a story 1. exists 2. doesn't have reviews saying it turns to shit at chapter 30, does a lot for securing a reader's confidence
>>24559737>We're seeing the emergence of a literary form derived from the lack of arable land on the South Korean peninsula
>>24559733>300 pages was an exaggeration of mine, nah man, tons of people in this space refuse less than 500 or 1000 pages if not higher. web serial readers want chunky works
Any webnovel recs which either emphasis on a male MC ryona'ing females wherever he go or a female MC that basically got raped everytime she went out of her room. I'm speaking in hyperbolical terms of course. Not really looking for an erotica. I brose nh*ntai and r/guroerotica for distilled human suffering, preferably through the humiliation and violation of their most sacred identity (being a beautiful wom*n). The graphic of sex itself doesn't really interests me and I skipped most of the pages and text depicting sex unless it displays a good visual on the violation of a wom*n. No point in reading the same lines about a wom*n enjoying getting gr&ped 1000 times.
Funnily, my first introduction to RR is through Everybody loves Large Chest. Some good stuff, but too spread out and sporadic.
>>24559767No anon, Everybody Loves Large Chests was my introduction to RR too, it's not that weird

>>24559653>I really love fancy rituals and coached sex so that's honestly super my thing.what webnovel are you speaking of, i want to read it
>>24559587To add some extra spice on top, it is somewhat common for those celestial forge fics to enter a "death spiral" where the author spends all 1000 words writing about the new cheat power and the protagonist musing about all the synergies with his existing powers until the just-writing-about-powers part hits enough wordcount that they add ANOTHER power and end up infinitely powering up with literally nothing happening in the story and zero plot progression

>>24559770Discovered a lot of good stuff while looking up for ryona, Goblin Slayer and the whole villainess genre comes to mind, though the latter are mostly slop, and both basically ryona-bait and failed to deliver.
>>24559781All the good writers there also have accounts in hentaifoundry, and the aforementioned guroerotica. Too much slop writers and even worse, too much homosexuals and furries freaks in these websites.
>>24559839I read some of your prologue and have some advice.
I think your writing is fine in the sense that its not going to be something that would turn off the average reader. But I think you could focus more on pacing out the introduction of characters a bit better. We got introduced to the guy with the tool bet at the dock, and then right away we're given a contrasting character that he's talking with.
The problem with how its written is that we haven't had time to digest the first character introduced. This could be accomplished by an extra paragraph or two that just creates some time with him on his own.
It doesn't help when the prose mentions stuff like the other character basically being his opposite. It's better to let the reader infer that for themselves through their interaction.
Hope this helps a bit.

I had this irl writer m8 who I once used to chat about plenty of books, but once he hit writer's block he increasingly gave in to distractions and his spirit became decayed. Now he's turned into an unemployed alcoholic gooner greeting me with packs of e-thot whenever I check my phone. And he used to be the brightest of my consoomer friends. I feel bad for him but now I just ghost his ass for long periods to avoid getting caught in his gooncrab spiral. Anyways, if you want female suffer porn slop I remember seeing a lot on pandamtls, but thatโs porn so thereโs naturally going to be a lot of sex
โNo to being the Suffering Heroineโ, โThe societyโs pet daughterโ and maybe โI come from the abyss to save humanityโ come to mind immediately for nonsmut (kind of) works, though theyโre all TS (Korean non ts fem mcs are 99.99% fluffy or power fantasies otherwise because the women there don't have a concept of suffering).
Searching up Texas/Lappland or just Lappland (Arknights) on Ao3 is also a great idea if you want some tasteful suffering. My personal favorite writer for that is 1_Crow_1, but heโs a unique writer (also chinese so youโll have to MTL on google chrome) so wouldnโt recommend basing the entirety of the tags off of him if you don't like his works. From what I've seen you need to have a really solid writing baseline established before you add any kind of degeneracy not the other way around.

>>24560157Excuse me nigger suffering is antislop
>>24560163Fundamentally anti-mecha sentiment. You have to structure your upgrades like you are selling toys to children. You have the base form, then the booster pack addon for extra firepower, then the high speed mode, the underwater mode, the animal mode, sword, combined armor hyperzord mode, and then job to the mid-season baddie after steamrolling everything else. THEN you get the mid-season upgrade after the mech got trashed and introduce the upgraded forms of all the add-on parts after that. How the fuck can someone write mecha and not understand this?
>>24560147No idea but I empathize.
I honestly want to write harem sloppa not for the Algo but so I can push a perpetually tired immortal (she messed up the ritual so while she can't die of old age she basically needs a Husky's volume in coffee to even move) as the main love interest.
>>24560165Don't you say. I once thought writing smut was easy money, but the further I tried to write, the more I whacked my productive drive with the bat of hedonism. >>24560467I could see outlining working if you're already thinking about your work in terms of bundling chapters into books. Otherwise, I don't think anyone's capable of doing more than a extremely broad strokes outline for something that'll reach 1k+ chapters.
Reminds me of the fact that you really can't rewrite earlier chapters. Takes time away from writing new stuff. In the end you have to conform new writing to old writing, in a way.
>>24560467I outline fully in prose like in picrel from my wip(I don't expect anyone to read it so it's whatever); I treat it as a 0.5 first draft I use as a basis for the actual first draft which will obviously be a lot more in-depth and nuanced per chapter. Sometimes there may be specific parts that are more elaborate in a scene than others like dialogue or specific things but this is the general gist of the whole thing(15k words so far).
My previous attempt at trying to pants write a full length 3-volume series was a total disaster and I dropped it 400k words in. I've been experimenting with a full outline since then, a short story and it worked much better than I expected so I'm doing it again with a full novel length work. So far so good.
I like villainous/evil protagonists but everything's always too easy for them that the story's too boring to slog though. They're too cocky. Someone please write a story about a villainess with a petty and spiteful personality that continues to struggle in the mud despite being banished or something, make them experience meaningful hardships/loss and take them off the advantageous position for once. No, shoelacers don't count.

my only worry is when i publish after finishing my backlog itโll result in 90% of my viewers leaving.
itโs an odd thing to worry about, but iโve found in practice that my mind is less sturdy than iโd thought it was. i once wrote a short, meandering serial of 48k words and one very fair review with a well-justified bad score completely knocked down my will to complete the story.
iโve found an odd phenomenon where while i wonโt get upset at getting bad reviews. moreover, i am completely unaffected by unfairly given bad reviews. but any bad review that has the slightest justification or validity of its criticisms, even only point, completely wrecks my will and drive to continue writing said story.

What are the main downsides to Scribblehub?
Hey I am new to this general. Can you write a good xianxia inspired webnovel? I am running out of passable chinese novels to read.
I want a novel that has no japanese/anime tropes, absolutely no harem, no romance, a capable and competent mc (take notes from Reverend Insanity), no child mc or supporting child characters (it's fine to transmigrate, but the mc cannot just mentally turn into an immature 12 yo), again take notes from RI, an man goes on a quest for immortality, he is driven and obssesed about his goal, nothing else matters, this is a common xianxia theme, write like that, don't write some story about a hero dying for his gf/village or whatever. That is boring and uninteresting.
Use lite litrpg if you must (and do not know enough about Chinese cultivation) or some generic western fantasy magic system, however it must be cool and power fantasy like, none of that fake lotr magic. Litrpg numbers, exp is fine for levelling up and tracking progress but drop the entire system thing.
Also avoid vampire, elf and necromancer elements. Dark magic is cool but necromancy is lame (you resurrect some zombies or skeletons and then what? There are several necromancer stories which started out strong (at least by rr standards) and then fizzled out quickly because necromancer was top class/job and author didn't know how to advance it further. Instead of dark magic pick something like an mc having an ability to learn spells and skills of characters/monsters, skilltree like that has tons of flexibility and it's much easier to advance.
Vampires have that hidden sex symbolism, same as elves, if there is no harem, no romance then sex isn't required either.
I've given you tips on how and what to write, now go and write.

>want to write good smut
>never experienced any form of sexual interactions nor romantic intimacy
>therefore I cannot write something that feels realistic
Any webnovels that have natural feeling smut? Male POV too if possible.
>>24562720Don't worry, the people reading it haven't either
>>24562720>want to write good smut>never experienced any form of sexual interactions nor romantic intimacyPlayfulness leading to being both becoming handsy. A kiss where one teases the other by pulling away just out of reach. The push and pull between the two until one breaks and they begin stripping down the other. That's the kind of stuff I enjoy. If you haven't experienced it it may be harder to write but by no means impossible. Watch some porn where it's more romantic, has foreplay and kissing rather than some turbowhore being mating pressed by a dude with a dick that's way too large.
Smut that I enjoy is impossible to find. Most are just degenerate fetishbait from authors that have clearly never had sex and don't understand why it's enjoyable. Sex for the sake of it is an empty and uninteresting thing. It needs strong emotion behind it that guides it.
>>24561831Is chapter one the first thing I'm supposed to read? Or the legacy stuff?
>>24562720>therefore I cannot write something that feels realisticWhy does it need to be realistic? You're just setting yourself for failure

Please, do not do this. Everyone reading this knows how these things work. You are not speaking to an audience of newbies. Your slight differences will never matter. Just use it like the shorthand it is and move on.
>>24563001this except all lore and worldbuilding
>>24562720People don't read smut for realistic sexual interactions, quite the opposite really.
>>24563014I actually like unique lore and worldbuilding but if it's too zany and takes up pages then it's annoying
One of my favorite Chinese .txt files is an elf forest where it's the daily life of an elf child. Very unique culture and social system, not just a generic 'kingdom but with pointy eared forest humans :0', actively having the protagonist engage in things like gathering fruit with other elf children, archery practice, helping out the village chief/elder maintain books, interacting with different elf villages, unique myths and legends, social relationships and structures, their attitude towards foreign relations and the individuals that manage them.
If you're going to use a generic setting to serve as a backdrop for an interesting story, then that's fine, butif you're going to do so then you definitely shouldn't pour pages of descriptory paragraphs into if its not an important part of the story. The stories I like the most are the ones that strive to make the setting interesting not just for the sake of novelty like 'oh yeah this is like that', but to interact with the protagonist or other characters in a meaningful way and guide their development.
>>24563035One look at /wbg/ on either /lit/ or /tg/ or even reddit's version makes you realize pretty fast how shit 99% of worldbuilding is. And how it's mostly maps apparently.
