>>24559205>What is Web Novel General?A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royalroad, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more
>Why read web novels? Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.
>Why write web novels?Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See https://graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Using 3D environment, anda style inspired mixture of South Park and the Wojak I intended to produce a limited animation series to promote my writing.

But it got only 50 views, and the people I showed it to told me it was the worst shit ever. I concluded there was no audience for it.

>>24564033>>24564041>>24564043Me again, because I post faster than I read.
The animation is OK, but can certainly survive a re up. I'd try to get the narrator voice right. That's easily done today. Style is barebones, but you know that, too. If you want to get better at it, make videos lengthy 20m or more and post these kind of videos as short, e.g. under 31 seconds.
>>24564045Very interesting. I am finishing a world or rather universe on my own. Maybe I can post it there?

>>24564043Because it really is not that special.
>>24564048>If you want to get better at it, make videos lengthy 20m Again, it took one week to make that. So, 20 minute video would take half a year, and it is bound to be about as successful (not). It would a big time investment to absolutely no reward, making it was a lot of work.

It also helps if you keep a list of names you like. Then you can just pull them out whenever.

Te he dado consejos sobre cómo y qué escribir, ahora ve y escribe.

>>24564728Yeah, it's both a snowball and a catch 22: readers only pick fictions that have a bunch of pages already, but you can only reach those readers if they can see it, and the natural way is to have viewers.
Which is why most writers give up after a few chapters and why swaps and ads are so important, you need to put out your shit and shill it, someone will like it enough to click those rating and follow buttons.

>>24565007Brute force is always awesome.
>>24564946what, just download obsidian normally, and then take what you need from the ttrpg plugins, and then you add other extensions suited for writing. After that you start filling out your wiki, for world building chatgpt actually is good, IF you have a lot of ideas and know how you should ask it, the weirder the better. It's really good at fitting everything together with fantasy logic.
>>24565056>for world building chatgpt actually is goodIt really isn't. Deep Search is sometimes helpful to get a quick primer on a topic, usually isn't. No model can do synthesis of new ideas at all. And every model is too sycophantic for anything other than the most surface level "does this work at all or is it completely retarded" type spitballing. If that's what you mean then yeah, it is good I guess.
How do you all come up with names? I'm trying to name some nations and nothing really comes. Do you go for actual meaning or just something that sounds nice?
>>24565142I'm horrible with names, so I either search for something that already exists and fits the general aesthetic, changing something here and there, or string some sounds together until it sounds nice enough.
Also, last time we talked about names, one anon linked this site:
>https://donjon.bin.sh/name/markov.htmlBut it seems to be for people and not places and I can't seem to find one for countries.
>>24565127>No model can do synthesis of new ideas at all.Same as 99% of humans.
Nah meming aside you definitely shouldn't use it if you have no ideas but you can tell it "ask me questions about my setting" then gradually iterate upon various aspects and tell it to spit out an organized master document at the end.
If you want to build up something from the ground up then it works for specific scifi elements since it can dig up research and pare it down.
>>24565142My secret sauce is scoping around Puget Sound, and Scotland on google map. Sometimes I'll scour over Asiatic Russia and Far East zooming in sometimes to street level to find names that stand out to me. >>24565142Google translate.
I think what describes the character well then punch in that word until I find a foreign one that sounds good.
>>24565142names are unironically something i use AI for, since before AI i was just using online name generators anyway.
at least with AI you can give it more specific parameters than "masculine, elf" like including specific letters, sounds, or etymology and often even when it has shitty ideas it gives me a wider variety of material to come up with my own names from
If you aren't a fully qualified linguist, don't even bother with conlangs desu (desu)
>>24565142https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com
this website looks like it was made in the late 90s so you know its legit
>>24565176Sci-fi it's probably better than fantasy since you can just ask things like
>for XX MW laser with a focal size of XX mm fired in XX ms pulses over 1 second will it penetrate xx mm of high carbon steel? And it can do the math for you, or you can ask it for some loosey-goosey orbital transfer calculations but you still need to know what you're asking in those cases so researching through ToughSF or other resources is still probably more useful than an LLM. Fantasy is totally fucked because it's pretty poor at getting historical elements right, possibly because history is a mess of records and you need actual research skills to get anything useful out of it (or one really good source you choose to base everything off of).
>>24565205Autism is more powerful than a linguistics degree.
>>24563252>>search dungeon core>>status: Completed, Ongoing>>20 entries
>>only one with a lot of pagesroyal road's tagging system is shit and furthermore the default search field ONLY searches titles. most dungeon core stories don't have the full phrase "dungeon core" in their title
if you want better results, put just "core" alone in the keyword (NOT title) field on the advanced search page, and add dungeon to the additional tags. despite "non-human lead" also being appropriate many dungeon core slop stories don't accurately tag this.
doing this I get 6 pages of results
>>24565222Yeah exactly.
Plus with fantasy the most important thing is having good taste and the slopmachine can't do that for you.

>>24565242The real distinction is Yuri/Girls Love (light Entertainment reading), WLW (dramatic tryhard theater kid reading) and class S (retro highly metaphorical stuff with undertones that never become more).
>>24565244Probably.
It's honestly impressive how D&D just straight up murdered fantasy in the crib by forcing ideas that anywhere else would've been considered absolutely terrible.
>>24565259Thanks, friendly homomage, the only other word I knew was レズ (sounds rude desune), never heard of class S before.
>>24565266Honestly when you look at Appendix N it's hard to believe that they had such good inspirations and we ended up with what we have today.
>>24565259>WLW (dramatic tryhard theater kid reading)i like wlw fanfic but every web novel ive tried to read tagged GL felt so trite and silly. i also dislike light novels in general though
guess that explains that. i want real drama, great emotional work, and good prose. GL does not provide that
>>24565288>every web novel ive tried to read tagged GL felt so trite and sillyit's because GL is a japanese term so those web novels were written by weeaboos whose primary media diet is anime and manga. it's not a genre thing
>>24565127Case in point. You don't know how to use it. You don't ask it for ideas, you bring it ideas.
>>24565313This is just a pointlessly hostile copy of the first reply. What was the point of this?

I mean in part it's because of the hostile takeover and subsequent sale as well as trying to grift off trends.

>>24565428>is that allowed?Never heard anyone having problems with relaunching. Take the novel you wrote and use it as a test bench for your ideas and writing, see what works, what doesn't, get experience, and take your readers with you.

WebNovel sites, are just a place to put my books and chapters. So I can drop links, to do a sample chapter or a sample book.
None of my books? Are, like, WN material.
Well, maybe my one YA fiction, who knows.
I'm making what I think are traditional paperbacks. By traditional? I mean, as books once were. Here, I'm doing a lot of hard-boil and noir, around crime. I'm really not the author *anyone* going to a WN site? Is looking for.

"Help! I've been reincarnated into a mouse, and my cat is trying to eat me!"

so the one anon recommended (https://vadash.github.io/EdgeTTS/) works fine for me
thanks for sharing though
>>24567762the wandering inn literally changes the text color of certain voices, so this is the one medium you could do that, yes
the issue is that fonts are weird cross-device. you might have readers on phones where it all defaults to the same font because those fonts dont exist on the device. so be careful

>>24567538Don't dump spam. It's just like when you're subbed to a musician on youtube and they just dump the whole album as split tracks on the same day. It's just irritating. Spread them out.

why am I such a fucking whore
I draw the line at stats though

grandpa please stop doing that. you don't need to copy and paste the whole post when replying. if you wish to reply simply click their post number. if you wish to quote a sentence of theirs and reply as well you can simply highlight the section you wish to quote and then click on their post number while its highlighted. it will automatically reply to their post number and add the highlighted part as a > for you.
please, i beg and kneel. i dont know how much more i can take.
>>24567796stats and skill levels are shiiiiit
but unlocking new (single level) skills/passives that give the mc interesting new capabilities can be fun
>>24567766>the wandering inn literally changes the text color of certain voicesyup, they change the font size (pic rel), color, sometimes the font is invisible and you have to highlight it, hell there's a few chapter with music embedded that you're supposed to listen to.

I'll dribble them out.
One extra editing pass for the first RR book chapter by chapter can't hurt any. Might as well polish my turd,
>>24567927>Grow stronger without limit in all parameters, but lose all system support.Aren't most system stories about growing out of the system and doing exactly that? At least the gook ones are, Solo Leveling being an infamous example.
>>24567927Basically happened in pic related 9 years ago.
>>24567908Honestly someone that gets rewarded with evolution by the world for every little thing they do would be a great antagonist

Because goddamn.
>>24568024I'm hereby predicting a isekai litRPG fatigue micro movement of stories where the stereotypical isekai protagonist is the antagonist and depicted in the most annoying light possible
>he doesn't preview how his chapter looks on an e-reader screen before posting it
>>24568040Isn't the fatigue already here? I only read native isekai now.
>>24568101more or less yeah. I think it's why system apocalypse is so popular right now
people still like litRPG but are tired of isekai tropes
>native isekailol. which is why we have "isekai but without the baggage of isekai" stories
There are only three people in this thread. Me, the person posting everything that annoys me, and the person posting anything else.
>>24568146I made this post.
People really will go declaring "people are tired of isekai web novels" when the biggest blow-up of royalroad history happened 40 days ago and it's a cut and dry "modern person teleported into another world" isekai
YOU are tired of that trope. and that's fine. but royalroad clearly isn't, and neither are anime watchers
>>24568101I'm predicting low fantasy progfan and much lower scale power systems becoming more popular.
I've been noticing reader burnout with all the galaxy-level impersonal xianxia/litrpg/systemshit. requests and discussions seem to be asking for more personal, more intimate, philosophical but not preachy, etc
>>24568188>anime watchersIsn't
>Banished from the partyThe latest isekai fad? I'm not following anime anymore btw.
>>24568192>requests and discussionsnah man watch this isn't how you keep a finger on the pulse of trends
what is actually getting popular? what actually gets read? observe the unbiased data and nothing else
i remember people saying people are tired of isekai in anime a decade ago and that shit is still going strong. and it'll be going strong 10 years from now, i bet
>>24568188Don't make light of the trailblazer sloppers, veterans of the game. They've read thousands of isekais over the last decade. The kings of kings.
>>24568194It's not the hottest fad. I don't check narou ever so maybe I'm behind the cutting edge, but I think that trend has come and gone. LNs are big on romcoms again, MakeIne, Alya, Tonari no Tenshi, the stepsister incest one are all topping the charts. Slime and Eminence in Shadow are the only isekai topping the charts recently and they are big legacy names. People are getting away with non-isekai fantasy having shit like guilds and such so making the protagonist actually Japanese isn't such a big hook and you can avoid the stigma while still indulging in all the tropes (see, 魔女と傭兵 among others).
>>24565695even if this were true, which it's not
I'm tired of romance being a staple in fantasy. I think it's alright if its sprinkled in as spice but I don't care for it otherwse. I think Highserk did it best.
Are there any twin yuri novels
>>24568287RR picked up on this forever ago, it's kind of crazy how many stories have asexual mcs
would readers on rr enjoy cs lewis adjacent literature or am i doomed to never be able to get any pay piggies in the pigpen i built?
>>24568315>cs lewis adjacent literaturearticulate this better and you'll get a better answer
but my response is probably no. Narnia would not have performed well on RoyalRoad, and I doubt you can write something as good as Narnia
>>24568325not narnia, more like the themes of that hideous strength mixed with a fantasy edge.
>>24568362this still gives a pretty poor image of what sort of story you want to write. so no one can give you an answer how it will do on royalroad
almost all success cases on royalroad are power fantasies though. if there's no hint of that the answer is probably no
>>24568379Not I, but I do want to carry over the discussion for a few posts next thread.
