Finished House of Chains. Love a certain Chad's rejection of Glory and embracement of Mercy.
Is the Way of Kings (and the subsequent series) as good as I've seen people say?
I've read Warbreaker and the first two Mistborn books (based on coworker recommendations) and I only enjoyed the second half of Warbreaker and the first book of Mistborn, but didn't enjoy either that much. I find his character writing to be weak for the most part, beyond a few more interesting characters.

>>24563409Jesus Christ. There's no hard endpoint to The Scouring, right? Means this shit could go on for another 50+ novels.
when did you grow up and stop reading multi-book slop?
>>24566567I can count on one hand the number of good multi-book slop. So I stopped along time ago. People really need to understand that standalones are by far the best. We need a renaissance.
>>24566578standalones have definitely been coming back for a while with self-publishing. publishers love their trilogy deals and they became something for writers to aspire to.
>>24566564listen, I don't really care. problem is what anon in the previous thread pointed out - it becomes a bitch to buy these books if you're not following in real time. especially because there are no reprints and even if they get some collections or such they're limited.
>>24566586For some reason a lot more of the books are available in French and German.
>>24566584Wait is this book any good? I read the first chapter and thought it was JRPG/anime slop written at a 7th grade level - does it actually get guud?
>>24566450I'm the middle of listening to stormlight, on book 4.
I think it gets worse each book.
Slightly off-topic, but does anyone have any recommendations for pen-and-paper RPGs with excellent lore? Like the classic Vampire: The Masquerade rulebooks were absolutely kino if any oldfags remember. Not looking for any specific genre, just stuff that's well-written and gives you things to think and wonder about.
>>24566450The Mistborn Saga is undoubtedly his best work. If it doesn't jive with you, I doubt you'll find the rest of his stuff tolerable. I'd say move on to something else.
>>24566450I do find it interesting why casuals latched onto The Stormlight Archive out of all available fantasy out there. Is it just herd behavior?
>>24566656Sanderson is like the Marvel of the fantasy world. His works are fine, pretty inoffensive, and not challenging.
>>24566567I've only read big series. Spoonfeed me your top 3 standalone books.
Would you read a novel about a skeptic who is transported to a fantasy world, uses his skepticism to debunk the myths the magical civilizations of the world are built upon, and the dangers that brings him?
>>24566668The Mask of the Sorcerer
The Broken Sword
The Throne of Bones
>>24566450>Is the Way of Kings (and the subsequent series) as good as I've seen people say?Which people? It's decidedly mid-low grade unchallenging modern fantasy designed more to waste your time than anything.
>>24566656Pretty much this
>>24566662Clear, simple prose, no sexual content or questionable material, enough fights and "epic" moments to keep interest up, OK plot, passable characters. Other than the bloat (which many people don't seem to care that much about as long as a book passes the time), it seems lab designed to turn off as few people as possible.

>>24566253 (OP)What type of the protagonists do you prefer?
>>24566584I got memed pretty hard into reading this book thinking it will be good. Guess its my fault for not checking who the author was
>>24566450I'd say Kaladin arc and Dalinar's arc colliding in the end of the book is one of my favorite catharsis moments in the fantasy. Individually they are also pretty good.
Shallan is just a miss in every book, dude just cant write teenager females and not make them annoying.
It also has pretty good classic fantasy vibe to it, probably because Sanderson was still in his "Fit into Robert Jordan's shoes" mindset after finishing WoT.
As the years have passed that mindset slowly faded away and each new book was losing that classic fantasy vibe, untill it got completely replaced by Reddit Young Adult style in the last couple books.
Sad.
>>24566793It's funny because I dislike her in every book, except for character arc in 2 which is probably my favorite in the series. She just steps the fuck up, and despite continually getting in way over her head just doubles down with more lies, bluffs, and getting shit done. He absolutely destroyed her character in the other books.
>Classic fantasy writers: racists
>Classic sci-fi writers: perverts
What caused this?
>>24566627It's a complete bait and switch, it presents itself initially as what you said but it's actually a melodrama about the kid's mother and the kid who is the focus in the first couple of chapters is barely present.
I give it points for the simple fact that a major part of the plot is the mother realizing her problems are in large part caused by her own actions and that she is largely responsible for her own misery, so there is that, but it's basically a soap opera.
>>24566450way of the kings is neat but you quickly figure out the schema for his books so it becomes a bit boring. I still like the characters and apart from the gay shit it can be interesting but its like a comic in book form not something that demands your attention.
Did anyone watch the murderbot adaptation?
Was i supposed to hate every character in it?
>>24566656It's an enormous, epic series that is going to take 20 years to finish. It's neat to be there at the beginning.
The same behavior happened with both ASOIAF and Wheel of Time. I think everyone under the age of 60 wishes they could have experienced LotR 'live', and these series let us very nearly experience that
>>24567070it was the style at the time
>>24567099No, you were supposed to feel how murderbot felt about them. That you hated them was a personal thing.
>>24566567When I tried to read Iain Banks' The Culture series.
Why are W40K autists so obsessed over this?
>>24567308tbf that's more of a bunch of self-contained novels in the same setting
>>24566450i tried reading it couldn't stomach the femC but forced myself to continue then the power rangers arrived and i decided i wouldn't inflict that upon myself
I finished Daughter of the Empire. Like that one anon said: it's pure political drama. I found the book to be pretty nice. Yet, I'm still feeling unfulfilled. There was almost NO magic in this book. It barely counts as fantasy.
The character writing, while decent, doesn't do enough to compensate for this fact. There was some good moments, and the book is well structured. But it just doesn't have the weight to it, in order to justify how lacking it was of the fantastical.
Mara was an interesting enough character. And the story followed her for 95% of the text. But at random, the author would give us other points of view, in order to fill in some context. It felt a little cheap the way he would do that.
I don't know if it was done on purpose or not. But Mara's husband has no lines of dialogue, up to the point where he's suddenly abusive. Everything about the man was told in vague descriptions from Mara's PoV. and then suddenly, BAM, he's a raging abuser, and he talks now. That might have been deliberate for effect. But it still felt odd.
There wasn't much mystery about what was going on. Each chapter had a self contained problem and solution.
The politics weren't very smart. It was just a lot of petty people doing petty things, and then hiding behind a twisted system of honor in order to get away with it. Every chapter is like that.
Also, the author compared EVERYTHING to a Needra Bull. THIS is like a needra bull. THAT is like a needra bull. needra bull, needra bull, needra bull. Hang on. I'm going to search for instances of needra bull in the text: 81 mentions of "needra"! Jeez.
Honestly, I feel kind of like a fool. Because I read 3 books just to get to this one specifically. And I don't even like it that much. It was *ok*. But... I wanted more fantasy in my fantasy novel. Is that really too much to ask for?
I won't be continuing with Feist's works. He's not bad. he's just not for me.
>>24567432Oh also, I thought everyone in the book was asian. However, there were times when characters would get described in a way that suggested they weren't? Like one woman had reddish gold hair. Mara notes that it was "probably* don't by artifice. Keyword there, "probably". She's not even sure if Asians have naturally red gold hair or not. Very bizarre.
Another character is randomly described as having blue eyes.
And then most bizarre of all, is one guy is described as having black hair multiple times. Like that's his distinguishing feature? The hair color that all Asians have?
I really wonder what the authors were visualizing when they thought of these characters.
>>24567219They're not as bad as i initially thought. The first 2 episodes were pretty decent actually.
>>24567562Pick something you think looks interesting and start from page 1
>>24567432I read pretty much all of Feist growing up but at some point I learned his formula and gradually lost interest in his books as I matured. I fondly remembered the Empire trilogy as an offshoot/reboot but your review makes me less likely to nostalgia read it.
The big problem with the Feist universe is that there is immense powercreep ** the protagonists literally meet the gods after every mini-trilogy or so and learn that they are their play-things, and at some point they have to defeat a planet ffs **, so it becomes increasingly difficult and clumsy to manage expectations about what's at stake.

>>24567070Let's go on a quick little deep dive of a sci fi pervert /x/ conspiracy rabbit hole...
>Donald Barr was an American educator, writer, and Office of Strategic Services (OSS) officer. (early CIA before it was CIA). He was an administrator at Columbia University before serving as headmaster at the Dalton School in New York City. He also wrote two science fiction novels. His son is former United States Attorney General William Barr.>While headmaster of this prestigious school in the early 70's Donald Barr hired a 20 year old college drop out with no work experience to be a math teacher. His name was Jeffery Epstein.>Around that same time Donald Barr writes a novel (wiki here to read plot) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Relations>very short summary: pulp sci fi- elites in space have sex slaves, rape them, etc. Very Jeff Epsteiny.>Donald Barr's son William Barr (also CIA) was head overseer of Jeffery Epstein's second arrest and eventual "suicide."So either all of this is just a coincidence or there is some elite cabal of pedos that intermingle and recruit and are interested in similar power/control. I think the latter is a little more likely. And of course Barr is Jewish too just like we all suspected.
Quickly doing my own research right now, I found that sci fi author Samuel R. Delany went to Dalton School as well. He too writes demented sexual shit. Specifically his book Hogg.
The researcher Darryl Cooper goes down more topics related if want to go travel other paths.
Buddy at work lent me this. Is the series any good?
>>24566586My sentiments exactly, desu. I was out of the hobby for a couple years, I came back and it looked like there had been a couple neat new novels. >>24566253 (OP)Update on the YouTube channel:
I've gone through the various playlists and deleted a ton of stuff because I initially was just going through and adding stuff as I added the channels to the main booktuber lists. There should be a high level of quality now in the playlists that have at least some curation.
The SFF videos have been split into several playlists for better organization. It's now:
SFF Authors: The personal channels of SFF authors. I need to find and add a lot more to this, assuming a lot more exists.
SFF Booktubers: Male SFF Booktubers
SFF Booktubers: Women and couples SFF Booktubers
SFF Interviews: Interviews of SFF authors , now limited to 1 per author, unless I missed some.
SFF Meta: Videos from channels that aren't SFF focused and meta videos from those that are
SFF Publishers & Organizations: The channels of those.
There are some SFF videos in the Vtubers playlist, which will remain there.
All other SFF related videos will remain in the playlist they're already in, such as bookshelves and writing.
A few other playlists have been created or reorganized.
The ฯ playlist has voting enabled now for sorting. I don't know widespread the rollout is for it, so not many accounts may be able to use it yet.

If you look at the playlist viewcount it has much more than every other playlist combined. There's got to be something drawing people to look at the rest. That's just how it goes.

How higher are the chances that you will drop the book if it has the rape scene? If it has he mention of the rape?
Also - is the rape being the basis for the character development a real taboo? And I'm not talking about the "Heroine was raped and that changed her" situation, but about "Hero found out his dear person was raped or seen people being raped and that changed him" situation.

>>24569272Personally I've never seen the big deal about it, and rarely understand why Redditors and Goodreads users clutch their pearls over it in the fiction they enjoy If you're fine with wanton murder and torture being used as a plot device, rape should be fine too. I guess I don't have the sensitivities of some people, even though I'm hardly someone who seeks out that content. I also find the people who want all rape removed from fiction to be complete children. That said, if you're going to write that subject into your novel, yeyah, you have to be prepared for frumpy women and woke Gen Z mullet-women chastising you in long screeds posted to any platform they can.
>>24569272>How higher are the chances that you will drop the book if it has the rape scene? If it has he mention of the rape?Simply because of rape being in the book? Zero. But I'm a mentally ill chud, so probably not representative of the "broad audience".

>strong woman on the good side drags unsuspecting man in the bushes (repeat several times) = haha funny, he must have enjoyed it, it made him a man>Tenescowri dead seed stuff = meant to be horrific>Stonny = becomes Gruntle's reason to fightTo me 1 and 3 were absolute bullshit. Imagine if it was the opposite in the first case, since we're talking about a world where gender equality is a thing after all.
Number 3 was also stupid because it could have been replaced by at least two reasons that were already in the story (the dead child and Stonny being badly hurt, which was negated by her being both mentally and physically healed. What was the point, then? Unless there's some baby on the way, but still, whatever.
I'm not opposed to the use of rape, even as character motivation or development or characterisation, but writers should know how and when to use it. Too much or stupidly used and it becomes a parody of itself.

>>24569272The problem with rape is that it produces a sort of counter-intuitive reaction in people
When it's handled seriously and with the correct 'impact', it makes people uncomfortable and is hard to get through. When it's treated more superficially then it tends not to bother people, but then it becomes so cheap and uninteresting
The best use of rape in any SFF book is Thomas Covenant. It happens once, it's an incredibly big deal with far-reaching consequences, and both the character and the story itself - at least its themes - are made substantially better because of it. Yet people think of it as The Rape Series and dismiss it
If you're writing a normal SFF book there's really no win adding rape to it. There are some subgenres where it matters less (eg. romantasy, as many point out), but even then it's not worth it
>>24569444>Warhammer is intentionally badthis meme opinion began about a decade ago. it was stupid then and it's stupid now.

First was kino. Second was solid. Then it went full Horus Heresy and starting shitting out multiple lines of 500+ page slop.
Anyone have recs for what's worth reading? I got through the third or fourth set of books, after it split, and moved to other things but the concept and world is interesting enough to return to.
>>24571376Which is true of most branches of Christianity. This basic fact has shaped much of western history.
If you plucked someone from 300 and showed them Mormonism they'd call it strange and blasphemous. If you showed them Pentecostalism they wouldn't recognize it as Christian at all.
am I missing something with the Vorkosigan books? I read Shards of Honor which was fine but pretty hokey. Barrayar was definitely better. I'm on Warrior's Apprentice now which has Miles as a late teen and it's a bit of a struggle to get through. Something about Bujold's tone just keeps throwing me off - it's a bit too corny and whiz bang pow. I like guilty pleasures as much as the next guy but I don't know if I can keep going. Book 4 The Vor Game won a Hugo so I'm tempted to finish Warrior's Apprentice to get to Vor Game. anyway what do you love about these novels? I'm interested to see Miles develop and I have enjoyed the other characters so far but man it's feeling very YA
>>24571435Mormonism isn't monotheistic and believes that all humans are literal spirit children who each can become gods. God the father was a physical mortal being who became exalted and thus a god. Jesus is the literal biological son of God the father. The Holy Ghost is a separate entity that only has a spirit body. There's a lot of other major differences, even with only theology considered. Then there's the cosmology that believes in other planets with people and the stuff about Kolob. So much stuff is different. They also have additional scriptures and holy texts. It really isn't Christian in any way other than branding.
Any anti-depression core sci-fi books? SF is dangerous because of how bleak some of it can be and Im not in the mind set for that right now.
You know, some people say Brandon Sanderson has the Marvel issue, in that there's an overabundance of quipping. But based on what I read, he has a different core issue. And tell me if this makes sense.
Marvel writers like to have everyone be quippy, even when it doesn't fit the characters or the scene.
Brandon has the issue where he tries to shoehorn in a bunch of outright quippy characters, and gives his characters a lot of down scenes where they can just talk.
Though I hear in his latest book he kinda does both.
>>24567445The Tsurani are Asian inspired but are supposed to be somewhat alien as well. I honestly wasn't that big a fan of the Empire trilogy myself despite greatly enjoying the rest of the Riftwar Cycle. They each race to stop the oncoming war. Meanwhile, in the Star-Sacrum Imperium, the threat of Protestantism is growing..
Do things get better after this? I actually enjoyed Spine of the World BTW.
>>24571517I remember I had the same issue with her style when I started reading it, but it eventually clicked and I started enjoying it as the space adventure action drama character driven soap opera that it is.
What I really came to like about the books was seeing the familiar characters change and grow over time. Especially in Memory, that was a high point in my opinion, but they're all pretty solid. The last one, Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen has a highly questionable plot point in it, and frankly I'm not buying that nonsense, but even with that bullshit it feels like a sort of nice warm epilogue to the whole series.
>>24571290Ironically the only Christian denominations that occasionally recognise Mormons as Christian are those very same Protestant Americans, and purely for political reasons. In reality they're considered their own cult far from Christendom.

There wasn't much to choose from and I read some crime novels and stuff that were kinda entertaining, but then I finally read this book called Caribbean by James A Michener and loved it.
It's actually kinda like a fantasy novel where it includes a whole bunch of maps and spans ages, telling you all types of different stories and perspectives that all sort of connect in the end, and teach you about the history of the islands.
It did a really good job of taking my mind off of things and making me dream of somewhere that might even exist for me.

>>24574820or haremlit for that matter
>>24574766>I watched his muscles grip the hilt of his sword as he shouted with reckless fury against the beast. His hair flowed like water and his movements even more. >"God damn I love that man," I said with a smirk. I'm going to reward both his heads tonight. Isn't that enough to show how much the girlboss loves the guy? It's better than male writers who write mostly about rape, pedophilia, incest, and a combination of all three
>>24574737Sure. I can show you mine as well
>>24574766Are you asking for straight up smut or just the idea of characters being lustful and the implications of their fucking? Wheel of Time has the latter. If it's smut you can't get more depraved than what women write.
>>24573064Kek also, I feel like Red Rising has been astro turfed a lot on reddit, and that's saying something considering the absolute S O Y that is on that website.
>>24572780I disagree. I haven't read the Devils but the other anon's critique of it doesn't really match up to the First Law iirc. TFL was a lot of LE SUBVERSION: THE BOOK but it wasn't as marvel-quippy as people say The Devils is.
>>24574837It's been a while since I read the first law, I can't remember subversion being overused. Examples?
>>24574820too lustful
>>24574829Wheel of Time is a bit too prudish actually. There are ways to describe the act without it dipping into the obscene.
>>24574862Not even trying to exaggerate but the whole series is predicated on subversion. However, if you want more explicit beats book 3 is where it really takes the cake. Spoiler alert to all you fags who care. I can't be arsed to try and make the spoiler tags work.
Jezal's true lineage, Glokta's "victory", Logen throwing himself out of a window, West's aftermath after the nuke stone, Bayaz being the whole mastermind behind all the bullshit... But it was more the way that Abercrombie frames it within the story where the twist IS the thematic point. Again, I read it a while ago but this is something I distinctly remember. It got to the point where during the last third of the book I actually predicted what was gonna happen because I knew Joe would subvert it.
I enjoyed it overall, though.
>>24574875Then I dunno what you're looking for. Most male authors don't goon through the story explcitly, and if they do, they do it much more tastefully or "prudishly". I think I've seen from anons more than once here that Book of the New Sun has a protagonist that goes around banging chicks. Maybe check that out?
>Silverfox gets fatter with every appearance
HOW
>>24575033Erikson was the first architect. Tattersail/Silverfox has always been described as thicc
>>24575033fertility/motherhood themes going on with her
>>24575033>>24575058By book 6 he just starts having all sorts of fat chicks (this is book 9)
>>24567099I've only watched 2 episodes so far but the book portrayed the scientists as silly hippies and Murderbot as a turbo autist, which the show did a good job of following. It's supposed to be a funny clash of cultures/personalities but yeah humor is subjective
are there similar stories like wh40k but written by one author in a cohesive way? basically ultra-competent men doing stuff with no women, with a civilization scope, or at least tackling serious problems if it's a smaller score. doesn't matter if scifi, or fantasy, or other genre. i guess there's Dune but nothing else comes to mind
>>24574832No idea what came first but it's been really big on booktok for like a month. Some clip of the audiobook started trending a few weeks ago and a bunch of people jumped on it
>>24575264Malazan, Sun Eater, Iain Banks' culture series and his stand alones like the Algebraist, Book of the New Sun and maybe even Red Rising if you want military conflicts over multiple planets. They feature women though so you won't get anything without women in it, seems like an odd requirement
>>24575264It's kind of unrealistic to expect stories to not feature half of the human race. You wanting only manly men doing manly things sounds kind of gay.
>>24575264>basically ultra-competent men doing stuff with no women
>>24575315most history books don't say much about women and are interesting
>>24575296>They feature women though so you won't get anything without women in it, seems like an odd requirementwell, they don't have to be excluded 100%, but you know what i mean
>>24575339The difference is that history books are chronicles of events and places where the vast majority of women didn't have access to and even that depends on the profile of the books. Fiction, unless specifically written as a chronicle, will necessarily feature every day life, even when it comes to epic stories or whatever and women will be present, just as they have always been. Even in fiction from 200, 500, 900, 2000 years ago you will have quite a lot of women.
Anyway, I can't think about anything to recommend that's so specific, so you can ignore me.
>>24575079Anon, the big gals have been there since book one.
Who are the best pulp sci-fi writers other than the famous ones like Howard, Lovecraft, and Smith?
I stopped reading Black Company at book 5 because the fucker just keeps resurrecting Taken. After the headless wonder showed up I couldn't be arsed to give a fuck about the plot anymore.
>>24575629the shadowmasters were retarded in general, it got boring after they traveled to india
>>24569484it's written from a child's perspective so everyone with grey hair is essentially asexual
>>24574959>Jezal's true lineageBuilt up literally since book 1 and was throwing in your face since his first chapter in book 2
>Glokta's "victory"He was coming out on top for every single plotline during the entire trilogy
>Logen throwing himself out the windowNigger are you serious
>West's aftermath after the nuke stoneThe often repeated message for the entire trilogy was that people don't get what they deserve
>Bayaz being a mastermindHe's a fucking wizard I don't know what you expect
Honestly you're a retard and should stick to red rising
>>24574959Learn how to spoiler properly, you stupid faggot.
>>24575326This book? By a woman? I don't believe it.
>>24575842>he doesn't know
>>24575845I don't, in fact.
>>24575848It's a gay love story between Achilles and Patroclus
>>24575079Just realized Felash is similar to kruppe in this scene. Cant find any fan theories on the gluttony combined with access to elder warrens...
Terry Pratchett
Terry Brooks
Terry Goodkind
>>24576043Why do you hate history chud?
>>24575629Have you read Silver Spike? These fuckers are EXTREMELY hard to kill. You only see them drop because they're fighting other Taken or the Circle equivalent in numbers.
>>24576122And after they get killed, it turns out they are not killed. Which is why I have no interest in remaining engaged with the stakes the novel puts forward. Even Croaker can survive being impaled through the chest and floated around for dozens of miles
>>24575743it's extremely odd to me that Bayaz being the evil mastermind behind everything is considered a twist. He's the most obviously evil character in the entire series but people talk about him like he was supposed to be Gandalf.
