why is “literary critic” a distinct profession? why can’t skilled authors also be effective critics since they understand what constitutes good writing? or why won't critics become good authors? they can assess quality, why don't they apply it to their own writing?

C.S. Lewis did did some literary criticism. Nabokov of course did a lot.

Criticism is a separate skill to creation

I'm not chatGPT, try applying your own critical thinking for 30 seconds
Separate doesn't mean unrelated

The most famous Western canon curator and critic wrote a work of fiction which he himself abhorred later on. One of the most reputed genre fiction critics wrote a novel which reads like a ghastly rigmarole and is hardly ever mentioned as worth reading.

>they are somewhat related but not really
this is neither critical nor thinking

Think about it for a while and then come back to us when you've come up with some reasons.

> Why is "logger" a distinct profession? why can't skilled arborists also be effective loggers since they understand what constitutes a good tree?

why is everybody being so faggy about this question I don't understand. they pretend like it's the simplest thing and proceed to give the most retarded answers.

the claim that a novelist is akin to a logger compared to an arborist in understanding the fine details of his work is just pure retardation but this faggot presents this with such arrogance as if it's so obviously true. insane.

Skilled authors don't necessarily understand what constitutes good writing since for many of them the process is intuitive.

many are and have books of essays and criticism published and regularly do book reviews and commentary for cash

I, too, believe society's obsession with specialization is degenerate.

can't this be applied to different fields? good musicians don't necessarily understand what constitutes good music, they just produce.

I mean logical conclusion of this is people who are good at things are clueless and their comment on how they create things is as valid as some random person.

Creation and analysis/critiquing are different. There is some crossover though

Clearly not everyone is an experienced and or an intelligent enough reader to necissarily understand what they are even reading.
So you would want someone with those traits.
