"Había tenido" sweeps all over in this debate. Clear conjugation + clear distinction between possession and auxiliary verb for compound tenses. "Haber" when isolated means to exist with a presence connotation, like "to be present" (which "existir" does not have), and that is much more suitable to form compound tenses than a possession verb, because this last one has a thematic meaning rather than just formal. "Había tenido" means that the possession was present.
