The influence of modernism, cinema and American literature

When you're learning a certain forms or genres, most students ask something to the effect of "is it still X if it lacks Y?"
Despite the obvious answer, teachers do not want to be discouraging, so they inevitably say "Sure, that's fine, it still counts."
This happens so much that teachers who do not do this are viewed with hate or suspicion.
This has led, over time, to a complete eroding the definition of practically everything. The arts have suffered the worse

Modernism and realism are a big one. People don't talk about the change in acting styles because it's correlated with the rise of cinema, but even theatrical acting moved from a focus on long, dramatic plays like Shakespeare to a more realistic, emotional style.

A lot of it is theaterfags jerking themselves off, though

Because there's not really a tenable defense for why meter is required anymore.

plays should be poetry with a plot, if I wanted to hear naturalistic dialogue I would go outside

Let me rephrase: there's not really a tenable defense for why meter is required in verse anymore.

because meter is the foundation of verse. without meter you don't have rhythm, and if you don't have rhythm then you aren't making something that is to be performed. you're not making a play anymore, you're making a very low budget movie

Except the modern view of poetry and verse is simply as the best words in the best order, no meter required. So plays can still be written in verse without needing to be written in meter, though I do agree with OP's premise, they're generally just in prose dialogue.

But that's what I'm saying. Verse had to be redefined to fit the modern form of poetry which is explicitly anti-verse, and it's lead to poetry reading like prose with more linebreaks.

Then sounds like we're agreeing, all I'm saying is "should" has nothing to do with it, as meter as a requirement got dustbin'd a lifetime ago. And besides, a good line is a good line, meter or not.
