And if you insist on reading fantasy then maybe read some good literary fantasy like Dunsany or Eddison or read the authors that Wolfe Plagiarised.

The best way to approach this series is to push through up to the fifth book. So you can keep things fresh in your head and allow your brain to make the connections as easily as possible.
The worst advice, is to "read the four books and leave the 5th aside", Why the fuck does people say that? Are they retarded? Why would you ignore in any way the most important part of the story?
But anyways, keep reading till you get to the 5th book, then you will start to enjoy the whole thing in a new uplifted way, and it will be very rewarding to look back and connect everything.

It's worth reading Fifth Head of Cerberus after and maybe one of his later one-offs. I would switch off to anothet author before diving into another one of his series, espcally if it's Long/Short Sun, although when I got into his novels I did read a ton of them in a row.
