One hundred percent right. Ozymandias and Blood Meridian are obviously major works of literature but they have absolutely become Reddit. The thinking Redditor’s choice when they want to seem educated. They like the former because of le breaking bad and le watchmen, the latter because le epic grimdark.

Probably because a Breaking Bad episode was titled after it. Redditers are definitely not reading Percy Shelley

The problem with Reddit isn't that the site's format terminates any discussion that takes place beyond the top 5 upvoted posts for any given thread. It's not the censorship, the cultural rigidity produced thereof, or even the dysgenic moderators through whose Cheetos-laced fingers it is all enforced. It is not even the self-assured imperialistic nature by which this culture spreads itself, taken for granted by all who hold it that it is the consensus view in whatever place they find themselves in. No—the real problem with Reddit is when its users like things that are popular within my hobbyist niche.

It's like Evangelion to me where this strangely evocative esoteric masterpiece somehow touched a chord and got mainstream leading to massive misinterpretation and dilution of discussion with a culture that was never meant to get into it.

Seriously, though, what DOES make a book Reddit? All the books in OP’s post feel spiritually Reddit to me, they have the right vibe, but what’s the throughline, what do they have in common? Because obviously there’s a pretty big gulf between the best and the worst books on this list. Why are these books specifically reddit?

Because they are either written for redditors, by redditors, or adopted by redditors. King writes for Redditors, GRMM is a Redditor (fat and glasses), and Mccarthy's work was hijacked by Redditors who think the judge is literature’s Darth Vader.

It's funny thinking back on the whole "Evangelion is a deconstruction of the Super Robot genre" discourse that lasted for decades because those people were simply unfamiliar with older Tomino mecha shows (most importantly Ideon) and the Ultraman/kaiju movies that were the main inspirations for Eva. They just saw it as defying the tropes of the mecha genre of the time because that's all they knew since all the older influences hadn't reached western markets. Same people then called TTGL a "reconstruction" of the mecha genre despite it basically being a Getter Robo tribute.

>Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice."

This is all pretty vibes-based and as such subject to disagreement, but I think they’re all spot-on. It’s not so much that all these works are inherently Reddit, but rather the culture around them is often is.

It’s obviously not exhaustive though. Where is The Martian, for example? Or Vonnegut? Those are some major omissions.
