No one praises Dune specifically for the science part. It's the prose, the themes, thr philosophy, the actual stories etc that are considered good. Think of it more as science fantasy/space opera.

>the philosophy
>uhhhh leaders are bad and religion blinds people to becum tools for and weapons
I know his viewpoint was more like “religion is good for those who need it, but it’s bad when it turns fanatical,” but that’s still such a weak premise to build an entire series from. A history textbook would better impart that message than convoluted plots about worms and high-tech concubines conniving.

It’s a territorial reaction not a feeding response. They’re actually filter feeders who eat smaller sand worms and the larval form of sand worms, I think they’re called nymphs or mites or something, and it’s actually a closed ecosystem. The nymphs act like phytoplankton except they eat water, which is Arrakis is a desert, and then turn into tiny sandstorms who, if they survive long enough, grow into the gargantuan grandfather worms. To stop the smaller worms from growing into bigger worms and eventually competing for territory the larger worms eat every smaller worm they can find as a strong territorial reaction. So on their way to eating that 100k calorie human that worm probably ate several million if not billions of calories of nymphs. Think more blue or humpback whale and less shark.

>IS THAT... SOMETHING UNREALISTIC IN MY FANTASY BOOK ABOUT SPACE WIZARDS DOING SPACE LSD TO SEE FUTURE???!!! SAVE ME SCIENCE I'M GOING INSANE!!!!!

Anyways they filter feed on sand plankton, and attack sources of vibrations because they perceive them as competitor worms on their territory, not to eat humans.

What’s funny to me is how exceptionally efficient the desert men are in terms of like logistics, planning, combat and all that. But they are just absolute retarded apes in general, it’s not like this in real life. The idea that the Harkonnens just couldn’t deal with them because they mastered the sand doesn’t follow.

It's true, but most modern Westerners genuinely believe that third world guerilla fighters are superheroes capable of single-handedly destroying empires. See the popular opinion on: WW2 resistance, Mujahideen, Vietcong, Taliban, early stages of Ukraine war and so on. The fact that in reality all of these were proxies armed and funded by outside forces is usually disregarded.

Not true. The Fremen are an industrialised society, not some backward Taliban-like knuckle-draggers. Their dealings with the Guild brought them the benefits of technology.

The Fremen had the Guild on their side. The Harkonnens couldn't find their settlements because the Guild refused to allow satellite surveillance.

What is actually considered good are specifically the convoluted plots about worms and high-tech concubines conniving, and the associated vibes and aesthetic.

Without those Dune is literally nothing.

That's literally the same people. Some of the mujahadeen went on to form Taliban, some of them tried to form their own warlord states, but all ultimately joined the Taliban as the biggest and most capable group around.

Muhammad Omar, Mohammad Rabbani Akhund and Mohammad Ghaus Akhun were openly and officially US-armed and trained mujahadeen, and they also double as the three principal founders of Taliban.
