Borges totally destroyed Unamuno

>I really can't understand why people are so proud of being Basque... I already told you, I have that blood too, but when I list my origins, I'm very careful to forget about the Basques... Now, Valencia is something else... Look, I remember something I wrote in one of my stories: the Basques have done nothing else throughout history but milk cows; they've spent centuries milking. Especially in the modern age. Well-known landmarks are permanently overcrowded by third world vendors trying to sell your bracelets and chinese tourists being chinese tourists, Cities are literally all the same above a certain size, with the exact same third world slums and gaudy luxury districts, while smaller towns and the rural countryside are also on death's door everywhere with the average age being somewhere around 70.

There used to be a point to travelling, but it's a complete joke that there is any to it nowadays, in a world so globalized, commercialized and demographically shifted.

It's not even about comfort vs. discomfort, but the idea that there are still places that you should go to because they and their culture is just so cool and unique. Like, who the fuck believes that contemporary Paris has anything to do with pre-WW2 Paris aside from geographical location and most landmarks still being there? Culture, meaning and society is an intricately interconnected spider's web, not a cargo cult where you can summon and partake in the spirit of ages and civilizations gone by through taking the billionth picture of the Eiffel and shit.

Ideology is not derived from knowledge but rather given form by knowledge. Your ideology is, in a typical and ideal case, is wholly downstream from your existential needs and interests and your level of intelligence and knowledge only determines how elaborate your rationalization of these innate needs and interests are when you have to justify them against the ideologies of competing individuals and groups.

I agree and disagree

There is an encroaching sameness spreading across the world as it urbanizes. And maybe it is harder to waltz into a city and get swept up into something. But a lot of that comes down to how engaged or open you are, traveling often blooms through interaction with people. Then you'll realize your cultural difference and be brought to interesting byways.

I don't attribute this to your position but there's something to be said for the issue of mere appearances - indeed you don't walk into a city and behold something architecturally unique, with people dressed in unusual fashions or whatever, things are built the same and people are dressed the same - this makes for a less striking image, but it does not mean that they are the same.

That said - Peru is awesome. It has preserved its distinctiveness well

The trip before then changed me in the core, I had a turn of taste in all things aesthetically and it is admittedly the only time in my life that I teared up over beauty.

Regardless... Traveling, inherently, disposes you toward adventure and novelty. I say this as only a mediocre example myself, personally, but it really is a skill issue.

Travelling doesn't cure shit.
Literature can cure racism because art is the greatest way to interact with a foreign culture and reading the greatest writers from different languages and places can truly make you connect with a entirely different group of people. I was reading a 20th century albanian writer/poet recently and it made me grow quite fond of them even if a albanian prostitute stole money from my wallet once while I was high. Just look at how differently people view the east now that China, Japan and SK have made their cultural marks on the west apparent. I hate korean art because I know it's derivative from chinese and japanese art but I can see how it would make people see them as more than just shit eating made to be slave subhumans.

If you saw the word "Unterseeboot" and you had never heard the word submarine before, how would you translate it to English? Would you see "Below Water Vessel" or "Under Sea Boat."

There's no excuse for "Master Race" except that they wanted to imply--where it was lacking in the original--an implication of slavery or domination.

Somehow the open borders people aren’t screaming for Tibet to be made Indian. They don’t want Africa to be 50% Chinese. I wonder why that is. In fact the only places you ever hear of “needing” diversity are western nations. And to the exact opposite we hear a lot about how we need to protect small native groups and their cultures from being absorbed by the majority ones. I thought the magic soil made us all the nationality and culture we stepped onto, but these people have been with us for centuries and need their uniqueness preserved? Yet Alibaba Jr is 100% Swedish? How does this mystery magic work exactly? How come those evil “expats” aren’t magically subsumed into other countries cultures and why are they assholes for sticking with their traditions, but it’s brave and powerful for some third world shitstain to bring their culture of hate and sexual emergency rapes to us?

To be fair, India or whatever place you're referring to is actually pretty scary. The "chuds" don't want to leave their suburb and go to a place that's dangerous and unhygienic and neither does anyone else, that's why they always go to Japan or Europe. Just a shame that all the good cities in the west have been churned up culturally by shallow consumerism, rampant immigration, and social media algorithms into the Nike jacket-wearing, broken english-speaking, potentially violent mob you see clogging up a Starbucks in any major city, swiping away on their chinese-made phones.
So here in the 21st century, our travel options are either 1) a transient, plastic city just like your own, or 2) getting buruli ulcer and shooting an elephant. I can see what the comic was referring to now, I guess.

>You fear not e-coli or an elephant charge but being challenged in the little pig-pen you call a comfort zone
I fear e-coli and an elephant charge. You've just grown accustomed to a curated delusion, imagining motives and identities in people in order to justify your own nasty behavior towards them. Maybe your family taught you to be this way, maybe social media did. I'm sure it's convenient, being able to happily imagine all the bad people who disagree with you as this or that. In this way, spiritually, you are the same as the racist chuds you decry, manufacturing another person's thoughts or feelings inside your own head because it keeps you pleasantly ignorant of the actual world around you.
Now, you can whinge about people not going to places that are objectively terrible and proclaim "there's a whole world out there!" but deep down, everyone knows that you're just being dishonest. That you are a liar, even to yourself, turning places you've never been to into some attempt at manipulation.
I've seen enough by traveling. If I was interested, I could watch a vlog of someone else suffering through some hellhole like everyone else does. It's the human thing to do, to want the best experiences with the limited time we have. And that best is getting worse, that's the problem. The third world exists in two planes of existence: the brutal, smelly, ramshackle dystopia you see in national statistics, and the nice, fake-authentic, Disneyland version made up by and for white boomers. Don't get sissy because you haven't figured that out. Just chow down on some curry from a restaurant in your nice, white neighborhood and be thankful you never have to see the "whole world out there".

People who struggle to discover the self will go out in search of themselves. This is a mistake because, shockingly, you are not somewhere else. You are literally here, wherever you are. People who can't even discover themselves at home will not find themselves fucking strangers in Paris or eating shit in India. The more grandiose or unnatural an idea they have of who they're supposed to be, the more discontent they are with their failure to achieve this deluded vision of themselves and the more compelled they feel to travel. They'll get addicted to this as a way of drowning out the silence in their hearts with constant stimulation and new experiences. The change of scenery feels like progress to them and travel becomes a replacement for personal growth.

I think it's more likely to turn intelligent people into general misanthropes, rather than humanists, who think according to realistic assessments for survival. Human beings are just coercive, violent mechanized chimps. There's nothing worth preserving or protecting in this vile species outside of one's own interests. It's not hard for any population to be debased, like rundown areas of Eastern Europe or ancient China during famine and plague, resorting to "inhumane" Peter Scully tier acts like cannibalism, corruption, human trafficking, etc. to survive much like chimps. I think travelling is a waste of time for non-intellectuals since they'll just see what they want anyways (i.e., perception is theory-laden).
I think UG Krishnamurti got it right in his "Swan Song":
>The only test for me is money. How free you are with your money? I don’t mean, “How wasteful you are with your money?”
The vast majority of peoples' "belief" or even "traditions" just serve as pretexts for material interests or so on. There's a reason you can model human collective behavior with ~95% accuracy based on human behavioral ecological principles.
I think the worst people in this world are paradoxically humanists, which coincidentally many Westerners tend to be, because they think human beings naturally lean towards the "good" when materially fulfilled; human beings have largely leaned towards the "evil" since time immemorial due to hard biological and evolutionary facts. I think it's interesting how both the far-right and far-left are fundamentally humanists, and the more intelligent, cold, and technocratic view that's based on human behavioral computational models are dying out.
I think it would be nice to destroy the global economy, supply chains, and analyze the trends of behaviors across various races. If I were a Satanic elite, I would do this while data mining the trends with a smirk on my face.

Elephants are highly intelligent and sensitive beings. Subhuman garbage like you is unable to remain on topic or think with any criticality.

I've only been back to Myanmar once since the overthrow. It was heartbreaking. The war is fought only on the outskirts of the country. A lot of young writers and poets and journalists I knew from the city went there to fight. I hope their work will be translated one day.

Women are no more evil than wolves and lions are evil. Evil implies a deliberateness that is contradictory with nature's lack of deliberateness. Only men can be truly evil because only men possess the agency to make meaningful decisions one way or another.

you are the one who has grown comfortable within your white middle class suburb. If you actually lived in some third world shithole amongst the people and not some tourist spot, or even just some ghetto in your own country, you'd know that fear of other people is 100% justified. White liberals are just completely detached from reality, they live in a fantasy world.

Reading made me more fascist and traveling made me more racist. Bourgeois leftists travel to the most affluent tourist destinations with a retinue of simps, guides, and guards and think they are authentically experiencing a culture because if it. They rarely experience the world outside of their carefully curated social bubble. It reminds me of how India was always presented as a very spiritual and lofty place prior to the availability of mass tourism and the internet. Mishima mentions that where he expected this kind of spirituality, he found flies, feces (unironically), blood and barbarity. A bourgeois leftist would hardly have had this kind of experience because they would have attended only to the upper echelons of society, meeting with royalty, princes, the bourgeois of each respective culture, etc.

The bourgeois really do form a sort of international vanguard that makes this cross-cultural world-without-borders seem more realistic than it is.

India is a very spiritual place. It's possibly the best place to get a view of the human spirit in action. It's intense, face-paced, and in your face all the time. The human spirit is chaotic, sexual, and often a disgusting affair, but this is the very pot in which developments of the human spirit and culture happen.
