What the FUCK was the Israelites' problem? Were they just retards? Why would God choose them as his chosen people? They return to idolatry every 5 seconds.

First of all realize they stole most of their religion from their betters. Read Eneuma Elish and look at the flood tablet in the British Museum. To me the book of judges reads like the folly of man and how no earthly ruler could satisfy the Israelites, the author stresses, "In those days Israel had no king, everyone did what was right in their own eyes". God chose the Israelites to show the world who He was, that he could redeem and make great a people of no particular renown. Their kings were just as flawed. Which is why Jesus is ultimately needed because we as humans could not conquer sin on our own.

When God does something nice for you it's because of his own goodness, not yours. Ultimately the Israelites ended up settling at a strategic midway point between three major continents, they were chosen because they would end up within the Roman Empire and in a good spot to start spreading Christianity from.
