I think affordable e-ink devices will give us a moderate bump in readers. Most people dont want to buy books and we all know we can get online all the books for free we could ever want to read for a lifetime but most dont bother, when they try to read in their phone or computer something feels off but they dont know what it is, is harder than it should be. Is because of the strain on the eye from focus on small areas and getting hit with light directly.
E-readers will make reading pleasant and comfy again.

From what I can tell the same basic device for just reading is cheaper. The thing is that that device is becoming rarer and companies want to sell high end tablets with the latest processor because that just happen to have e-ink screen and theyre pushing color e-ink now. There is no need for so many bells and whistles.

The kobo touch was under £60 for most of its life, I got mine from a library for £30. The Clara BW which would be the closest equivalent is £129.
You're right about what the companies are doing though, it looks like kobo is moving to phase out all their bw models for more expensive and inferior (for b&w reading) colour models. I do like how they're supposedly making them repairable though.
