Why did none of you tell me this book is so much fun???
I’m having a blast out here reading this thing when people have been telling me that it’s really complicated or whatever. Smith’s writing is surprisingly vivid and his humour really shines through.
Anyone else had this type of an experience with a book before?

Yeah I started reading Carlyle's French Revolution thinking it's just another history book

Infodumping for any position is a way of saying you haven‘t actually read it yourself and learned to synthesize the information into a concise and topical point. You should be embarrassed.

Because is not? I listened to the audiobook and I didn't get that feeling at all. His Theory of Moral Sentiments is much more enjoyable, I find that his sharp observation and his ability to make you agree with what he just told you because once he points your eyes to it you wonder why you never saw it so clearly yourself, shines better there.

Just wait till you find out just how funny Ulysses and Recognitions are. Both had me laughing my ass off.

basically any classic that you think is dry and dusty is actually fucking funny and entertainingly written and that's why people read it and love it. if you're literate enough to actually just read it and understand the tone you're in for a good time. this goes for almost any "classic" work from gilgamesh to the sound and fury

I read a bit of it years ago, just out of curiosity. It is really well wrote and the eras prose is mesmerizing.

No exaggeration to say when reading that book it was the wake up call and surprise of my reading life so far. No other history books compare now though sadly after reading it, not even Carlyle’s own

I still have to read it sooner or later
