What Mishima Book Should I Read?
Looking to try out Mishima for the first time. Read about his coup and some other tid-bits about him and he sounds really interesting. looking for a good introductory novel of his. Though, some other shorter works could be better introduction to him, I don't know so what do you guys think?

Depends what interests you about him. His literature is very different from his nonfiction. People who think he's le right wing bodybuilder man might be put off by novels about young boys watching their parents have buttsex through a hole in the wall and falling in love with death. I would recommend reading Aesthetic Terrorist first.

But many of his novels are novellas so you can just blitz through one and see if you like it.

I really would like to see more of his ideals and convictions in a writing of his, though if theres a more interesting work of his that strays a bit from his beliefs I'd happily try that one out first instead.

i've read four books by him and they are all plastered with his ideals. they all deal in some way with honor in life and honor in death.

I think The Temple of the Golden Pavilion is the absolute best introduction to Mishima

It's funny, I recognize The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea but I didn't even realize it was written by Mishima. I remember looked at it in a book store while ago and considered buying it. I guess I didn't know who Mishima was at the time kek. I'll check out the work >>24622062 and >>24622091 both recommended too, but so far the sailor seems like a pretty good intro for me. Thanks!

patriotism is the very best place to start. it's short, contains some of his most evocative writing, and covers thematically what is everpresent is his serious work. your opinion of patriotism will be your opinion of his work as a whole. if you like patriotism, go on to confessions of a mask, as it is highly autobiographical and will fill in the path by which he arroved at his beliefs. you will see the characters he describes from his childhood appear again in his later works. from there you can moatly just read whatever, but save the sea of fertility tetrology until after you feel familiar with him.

Start with the tetralogy with a different Mishima book in between each one.

imo at the core of Mishima's fiction lays his obsession with aesthetics, which informs his irl ideals and is way more interesting and appealing than any political exhortation he could have ever written

Is there any update about a Kyoko’s House translation? I’ve been dying to read it for such a long time. I know there’s a Spanish translation out there, hasn’t anyone at least translated that to English yet?
