Every character-driven story viewed from the non-omniscient third person will result in a sympathetic "grey" character, to any writer "worth his salt". In "real life", none can remain a true idealist for long. Many have pretended, yes, but a peek inside themselves would immediately illustrate a creature constructed from contradiction and lies.
