Grey moralism killed literature, most heinous acts in history were committed out of naive idealism but cynics would have you believe nobody could *really* believe in communism or free markets. The idea that people were too smart to disagree with our western liberal ideas is a scourge on literature

History is not a compilation of acts. Read CPGB (H) and Annales.

GRRIM whites about the "human heart in conflict with itself", a battle which characters, including [you], having been waging since the advent of consciousness. Every character-driven story viewed from the non-omniscient third person will result in a sympathetic "grey" character, to any writer "worth his salt". In "real life", none can remain a true idealist for long. Many have pretended, yes, but a peek inside themselves would immediately illustrate a creature constructed from contradiction and lies.

If you actually read the biographies of great or even lesser men you'd see that that's not true. Just the act of giving up meat proves you wrong

You cannot possibly read the biography of the so-called "great men" or "lesser men" and drink those words down as lies. They are all written with a agenda, and no one besides yourself can know yourself (and even then, near impossible), and as we know autobiographies are self-aggrandising semi-fictions designed to perpetuate your legacy through falsity and myth.

lol "grey moralism" might as well have given birth to (western) literature. Read The Iliad.

I don't understand this boards obsession with this piece of shit. His series was ok but it's obviously never going to be finished, in fact he's never going to release Winds of Winter and nobody except you dweebs reads the spin-off books. You're going to be left with something Brandon Sanderson shits out in two weeks when his estate/publisher decides to deservedly ignore his wishes.

If people are morally grey then please explain how communism managed to kill 100 million people. Such thing was only possible through deep idealism and sincere belief in something, cynics could never do such thing

Western morality was infantilised by Christianity. Everything was reduced to good or evil. The Greeks took a more nuanced and realistic view.

I hate this meme because its just not true. Ever heard of Greek tragedies? Shakespare? Mos of them were morally grey/complex characters at conflict with themselves.

Bait? Bakker says pretty much exactly what the OP does, and that humans commit their greatest atrocities out of misguided idealism/beliefs. Yes he also touches on a few of the points also raised by this anon >>24626274, but man's contradictory, self-deceptive nature doesn't mean that idealism cannot exist. Clearly even in today's world, with all the knowledge of our inner operations that neuroscience has given us in the last few decades, the brain STILL manages to outpace us with its lies, and people still genuinely believe in their delusions (and that includes you and me)
