Quite a few of the nerds at my job read but it seems to be all scifi, fantasy and warhammer stuff. I was reading Dickens at work and a guy noted that and told me he 'can't get into literary fiction, the language is too hard.' I love Dickens but he is not exactly high brow. It is the content which is the problem. The content of most serious works of fiction is awful, uninteresting, unenlightening to a modern audience with internet access. Nonfiction is almost entirely outmoded by the internet's capability to be an instantaneous, free, infinite encyclopedia. What remains to be sold as a book? Poetry maybe, smut, genre fiction, children's books, and all of these sell pretty well, go figure. Target also has the George R.R. Martin books on the shelves, or did till a month ago, along with Tolkien books, and the occasional good popular historic book like “The Wager….”.
Also, books on design, and music, and cooking.
Yes, Target isn’t Barnes & Noble, at least in store, but their website has a decent variety of books, including Ancient authors, Everman’s Library editions, Modern Library editions, Penguin books, as well as more obscure publishers that even B&N sometimes doesn’t have.
Mostly you have to know what you want, and the obscure stuff is usually purchased in the standard minimum quantities they may have to buy like a half dozen copies or something like that, so books sell out.
I purchased several of the Obscure Cities comics from Targets website, and weird architectural books.

I worked in a public building.
I saw both the Men’s and Women’s bathrooms occasionally, but thankfully wasn’t a janitor.
The men’s bathrooms usually just ran out of toilet tissue, and had urine in front of the urinals and sometimes the toilets.
(Basically standard bathroom cleaning, with the urinals the fault of the cramped layout and urinal design.

Also, comics require interpreting imagery and symbols, (particularly Alan Moore’s comics) and better writers usually include a huge number of outside references, such as the Gaiman Sandman comics.
