freewrite "E-ink Typewriter" is $699 USD
these cunts have to be on their last legs
Anonymous No.24649900 >>24650186
We’ve already had this thread. There was a great groaning and moaning over the virtues of paper and pen, the obsolescence of the tiny screen and lack of editing capability. Some faggot posted porn and it was removed after ten minutes. Then more bitching about the price commenced.

Do you want more of that? Because that’s all this thread will be. Bitching and moaning, then the occasional cutaways from the apologetics; “it’s not that bad man”, or “it serves its purpose for what it is.” Then more bitching and moaning, maybe an angry rant directed at the people who said it wasn’t that bad or expensive: “ARE YOU RETARDED? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!” Etc etc etc…..

TLDR you’re not creative and you should rethink your life

I have a typewriter
I don't see what the advantage of this would be? It doesn't seem to print, which is the main benefit of a typewriter, that you get a hard copy

No the main benefit of a typewriter is the ability to reenact all the important scenes from Click Clack Moo

That piece of crap have only DISADVANTAGES if anything. Those useless gigantic toggle shits shouldn't be there, instead, the screen should occupy all of the space.
And yes a separate printer device should be available to attach the thing or print via wifi.
The reviews online don't give much motivation at all to get that thing, one guy said he lost a whole book he wrote in that crap due to a file error. Fuck that.

No, self restraint breeds creativity. Constraining yourself because you’re out of ideas is like chopping off your arm because you got a paper cut.

There is something to removing all stimuli and just having to confront the keyboard.

The main selling point of this crap is most likely for writers that get too distracted by the internet/videogames

Does nobody get annoyed at how slow this is, versus typing?

Am I just a particularly good typist, by /lit/'s standards? When I was in intermediate school and middle school they would drill us on typing. I'm 38, maybe it was a Millennial thing. We'd all get taken to the computer lab and we'd spend like half an hour, once or twice a week, practicing typing on the desktops there.

Anyway it really took with me, and I'm a very fast and efficient typist. I actually almost got a job as a stenographer once, I'm so fast and efficient. So I could never dream of writing anything of mine by hand, it's just simply too slow and laborious compared to what I can do on a keyboard.

Its for people who don't want the distractions that come with a computer, but still want to share their writing digitally (either to submit to publishers who don't accept paper any more, or to share online). I guess some people with a dedicated writing space could get use out of it, but if you have impulse control issues to the point that you need a separate device for writing, you will probably cave and reach for your phone or fuck around on your PC anyway.
Anonymous No.24650789
For that price range I would get an e-ink notebook.

I feel like "dedicated writing space" and fear of distractions are a newfag trap. These things give posers something to talk about besides actually writing.

An eink 8” plus bluetooth mechanical keyboard is LESS money.
Remarkable notepad if you want hand writing notes is LESS money.
A cyberdeck linux computer with a small horizontal screen and mech keys is LESS money.
An actual portable typewriter is LESS money.
A netbook that can only do text processing is LESS money.
A vintage computer with an archaic OS that can’t do online is LESS money.
An old NOKIA phone with a bt keyboard is a uselessly small screen and text edit only for LESS money.

The only thing that product provides is larp.

I have a second laptop I use as my writing laptop. I got it for free people had an old laptop "broken" sat forever and they just bought a new one. I just wiped the hard drive and threw an old version of Linux Mint on it. So when I pick up this laptop? Its for writing.

>James Joyce wrote lying on his stomach in bed, with a large blue pencil, clad in a white coat, and composed most of Finnegans Wake with crayon pieces on cardboard.
>John Steinbeck, who liked to write his drafts in pencil, always kept exactly twelve perfectly sharpened pencils on his desk.
>Victor Hugo set out to write The Hunchback of Notre Dame against the seemingly impossible deadline of February 1831. He bought an entire bottle of ink in preparation and practically put himself under house arrest for months, using a most peculiar anti-escape technique
>Agatha Christie munched on apples in the bathtub while pondering murder plots
>Stein, like Vladimir Nabokov, even liked to write in a parked car, which served as a perfectly contained bubble of stillness ideal for writing

It does not seem that "dedicated writing space" and fear of distractions are, after all, a newfag trap.

just install Debian on an old thinkpad and unplug the WiFi card. now you have a nice keyboard, large enough screen, no ability to shitpost while writing and you can plug in a USB stick to backup or transfer your manuscript. old thinkpads are kinda overpriced but cheaper than that piece of shit.

I absolutely get the appeal of having a device that's _only_ usable for writing. That part makes sense. What doesn't make sense to me is that they have the gall to charge the price of a laptop for something barely more advanced than a $5 pocket calculator. Their cheapest model, pictured, is 400 dollars. 400 dollars for something with less functionality than a 40 dollar tablet.

This is a scam of some sort. Probably money laundering.

I feel like I could design one for $100, and a pocket one that uses a snall keyboard to type with 2 thumbs faster (like blackberry almost)
These components are fucking cheap, literal pennies. Get a 3D printer and screw it all together and you can give people that disconnect from distractions for a better price than this garbage.

you arent thinking in terms of a business.
You're thinking in terms of yourself
you make one for $100 and now your buddy wants one
and then their buddy who is also a writer wants one
suddenly $100 isnt enough to meet the demand and make a profit on it

I was thinking in terms of building a prototype.
A text only compute module, an e-ink display, batteries, customer keyboard, maybe Wi-Fi to wirelessly sync with apps, and plastic frame; this shouldn't be more than $100 for a prototype.

To sell something like this I'd just price match a Kindle. So $180.

Just get an old AlphaSmart from eBay. I used one to write my last book and it worked very well - it isn't loud like a typewriter, and you have no distractions at all. They're also built to take a beating, so if you drop it, it's no big deal.

If anyone is interested, the book is called NSFW and it's my 3rd:

Good luck with writing.

Aren't eating displays like crazy because of the patent holder's licensing fee? It would be trivial to make a e-ink dedicated writing device, a la "cyber deck".

I literally just bought a $25 laptop out of the classifieds, installed a text-only terminal based OS and installed a word processor, a dictionary and thesaurus program, and a couple of other reference utilities and just do everything from the TTY console. No GUI, web browser or anything else to distract me. Using this setup on a laptop with a e-ink display would be awesome.

I've tried writing using phones and old Palm Pilot devices, but it's just not the same as typing quickly with all your fingers, where you don't have that delay. I would never go back from the AlphaSmart now.
