I once heard someone say Houellebecq is like a modern day Céline but isn't that bullshit?

Houellebecq claims to represent some kind of rebellion against the system or whatever but he has many friends who are Jewish & he is an islamophobe.

Céline was the exact opposite of this. He was rabid antisemite.

It's the most idiotic comparison that has ever been. Houellebecq desperately tries to insert himself in the French literary canon/continuity and Celine desperately wants to oppose and revolutionize it.

Many more differences but I think that's the most fundamental one.

Houellebecq always struck me as more of a Chud. Always explaining frustration with performative reason which consistently ignores a progressive solution to problems. It's more of a rationalization than true pure logic, it's not fainted either, most of the observations made in his novels are made by frustrated depressed avatars.

Yes. If you're not a very fluent French speaker it's the only Celine worth reading. The other loose a lot in translation because of the extreme stylization and use of French argot.

Céline was a man full of life essence who was an adventurer and a trailblazer first and foremost. In total opposition with Houellebecquian sedentary white collar incel misery which is a refusal of living at best and another deeply conformist facet as it is deeply embedded in consumers society at worst. It's not a matter of politics and other opinions these two may have formulated but something much more primal, regarding their flesh and blood. Which is why Céline is one of the most incisive writers of the 20th century and Houellebecq is already forgotten past his 15 minutes of fame

In recent months I've read some novels by Dumas and Hugo and almost the entirety of Racine's theatrical works, so I started thinking that my grasp on French got pretty solid. A few days ago I've started reading Voyage, and some passages completely stump me. It seems I still have a ways to go.
