On Being a Metaphysician
Metaphysics is the ultimate terrain of generalization: the terrain of all-encompassing principles that answer the question "what is everything about?" or "what is going on with everything?"
Therefore to be a metaphysician you have to know about everything, or given the impossibility of this a broad general body of knowledge and understanding with penetration in key fields. You need to be a polymath. There is no getting around this.
But what is important is what motivates such a diversity and rigor of curiosity: a desire to love and appreciate a great diversity of things in the world.
A true metaphysician is driven by a vast diversity of loves and passions, and the metaphysicians pursuit of many diverse loves inevitably converges towards a synthesis that mutually affirms their importance. The goal is to facilitate deeper communion with the value of one's loves.
The question of value is at the heart of metaphysics.
the pursuit of value, the pursuit of beauty is at the heart of the soul of the metaphysician.
To be successful in synthecizing diverse fields, one must love those fields with an inexorable passion.
What truly defines a metaphysician is a compulsion, an addicition to learning that joyfully and lovingly leaps from book to book, paper to paper, topic to topic ever more deeply learning to appreciate the world in its endless creative complexity. It is to tried every field as a field of artistic appreciation and utterly goon out at the grandeur and drama of existence. It is to be forever consumed by the call of The Unknown that forever seeks the depths in the cracks revealed by greater illumination.
To see divinity in the question mark.
