I really never liked the philosophy of "beauty." "everything should be beautiful" "aesthetics above all else" "we should all strive to make things look nice and pleasant and exquisite". It all comes off as very feminine and materialistic to me. People back then worshipped the stars for being nice to look at, but knew nothing about them. They didn't know *why* things in nature were beautiful - just that they were naturally beautiful, and it was god's design, and we should copy it.
Show me a philosophy or religion that delves into the filth. The grit. The shit and suffering of life. Beauty doesn't keep the world turning or pay the bills. We didn't get to discover space and the seas because of our pretty statues and paintings. It was the slavery, the labor, the advancements from unethical experiments, the sweat, blood, and steel that got us to where we are. What else matters in life besides exploring the universe and finding out why we exist? Why anything exists? We've been evolving as humans for thousands for the sole purpose of doing what it takes to unlock the mysteries of matter, down to the atoms and photons. Because we're capable of it and can.
It's real easy to preach beauty and pampering yourself to look nice and making art when society is ran by laborers deep in the mines, breaking their backs to keep things operating. Where's the philosophy and religion made for them?

I don't think "a higher cause" is necessary, but what some people (me) need is to feel useful in some way. Getting things for myself or "succeeding" doesn't really make me happy, but if what I do for myself helps or is enjoyed by others then I feel fulfilled.
