I read the Bourne trilogy years before hey ever thought about the movie. Plus many other spy novels from that period around then. To pick a unique one? I particularly liked this one series of pulp spy novel.

Dont remember th name of the series, but the name of the one book in the series? "the Sinkiang Executive". That series. Totally unique spy. He's all... down to earth, practical. all the usual spy tropes are done away with.

I just finished the first book, Call for the dead. It was good but I disliked how much sympathy he has for the Commies. Yeah, sure weโ€™re all human, but he going further than that: Smiley will watch a commie spy snap a womanโ€™s neck and pistol whip his friend and heโ€™ll be like โ€œoh these poor reds just want make a better world, what a monster I am to prevent them!โ€
