4channica Great Books – /lit/core discussion thread
1.
Holy Bible
Finnegan's Wake
Infinite Jest

These are undisputed.

2.
Ulysses by James Joyce
Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon

These are old-core and should be considered as equal for posterity's sake.
There are actually a great deal many volumes which 4chan.org/lit has come to a sort of consensus about.

The making of a new-core is not designed to replace the old-core, but to expand the knowledge as written down and accumulated over the course of so many years' discourses.

I suppose the britannica Great Books be used as a model; Harold Bloom's Western Canon should be accepted not as comprehensive but as part of the conversation as well. There are two versions of it also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Books_of_the_Western_World

He was immensely influential up until contempary times where he's basically never read. They've got Tristram Shandy (which is good) from the same century but no Julie, Emile or his Confessions who were all a thousand times more popular and influential (and are some of the best books of the XVIIIth century). But I guess having 6 books by the same author would have been too much, but in this case just remove the two discourses and replace them Emile and his Confessions

Consensus may be a joke. The whole point of /lit/ is to be absolutely without consensus imposition. So the actual consensus is unsummarizable.

Proverbs endure.
Memes of old are handed down in pure amber.
Lore dictates that the past must be cohered into the present and future.

I say truly that /lit/ has only one canon, and that is NOT reading Infinite Jest.

They believe god tests his servants.
Life on earth in merely time to collect good deeds for the inevitable judgment.
So the harsher your conditions, the more the opportunity.

On the flip side, when they are rewarded; in confliction, it stills falls under the same claim that they are the chosen people, confirming confirmation bias.

I don't think anyone expects God to be able to make a 4 edged triangle. Similarly a world with free will and without evil is a contradiction. However there is still tragedy without evil (such as earth quakes) you could argue a all loving God would not have deigned. But then ask yourself, would you want your children to live absolutely peaceful lives without ever being challenged without ever feeling fear? Or do you wish them lives of great challenge and themselves great strength to overcome those challenges?
