I don't think McCarthy is welcome on Reddit anymore since he was revealed to be a groomer and statutory rapist. I think you're in the clear.

He's a great writer and Blood Merdian is a super-human accomplishment.

I've never come across a book that echoes KJV rhetorical power in such a sustained fashion, and paired with the brutality of the setting/plot makes the juxtaposition hugely resonant. I don't think its fair to accuse it of pastiche or rip off of Elizabethan grammar/diction, etc., the immersion is just too complete. He brings it back to life.

Fag, blacks, kek and so on.

I feel that someone should have warned me that McCarthy was a niggerloving cuck.
I know. I know. What did I expect different from an American. Still.

Who would read BM and say that the writing is Elizabethan? He uses old grammatical turns of phrases but that isn't a copyright of old English novels. Numerous novels use them. The diction of BM is still very modern, but mixed with old English

"Who would read BM and say that the writing is Elizabethan?"

you would apparently. you act like it's an unheard of notion and then proceed to concede three quarters of the point (nobody said it was copyrighted and couldn't be used).

The Death Note of something is a thing people start to act blase about because it gets too popular but it actually is as good as people thought it was and that's why it got so popular in the first place.

It's not Joyce or Faulkner, but Blood Meridian is real literature and one of the harder reads at that. Just read it slowly and digest it.

This is the kind of thing that would be described in a really interesting way in Blood Meridian. He loves describing gross, disturbing, squalid realities of poverty and desperation with an incidental, passive tone like its ultimately no big deal and just what happens. People remember him doing it with violence and death but he also does it for things just being totally shit.

Some people who read blood meridian and feel like they got it no problem have a lower level of comprehension than those who didn't finish it cause they felt like they couldn't understand it. Its a very individual thing how uncertain you can feel of how much before you feel like you're not reading the book right.

You can obviously look words up, but sometimes what's tricky is how they're used and just knowing the definitions doesn't make things clear. Sometimes he'll use a term so obscure its hard or impossible to even look it up.

Look up as much as you can be bothered to look up, reread as much as you can be bothered with bits your unsure of try and figure them out, but don't take any of these practices to the point that they stop you from getting to the end. Do them as much as you can without turning the book into a chore, and making any real effort will make it so you probably understand the book better than a lot of people who claim to have had no problem with it.

Also the vast majority of literature is way easier to read than Blood Meridian. Other Cormac McCarthy books are a million times easier than Blood Meridian. Give The Road a try if you want to see how big the difference can be If you tried to read 20 random other "real literature" books they would all probably be way easier than Blood Meridian. If its the first serious literature book you've tried you really jumped in at the deep end.

Redditors destroy everything they touch by association. They did it to 1984 years ago, and now they are doing it to Blood Meridian and Dostoevsky. Part of the respect of these works necessarily stems from the thoughtful discussion that they spawned. If reddit infects it though, the discussion, and therefore the respect of the work itself, will suffer.
