>teach philosophy to 10th graders at a Chesterton Academy
>doing portion on Aristotle as prep for Aquinas
>get to slaves by nature/slaves by convention section of Politics
>girl raises her hand, 'if Aristotle realized that many slaves should not be slaves why does he preserve slavery? This argument doesn't make sense blablabla"
>Tell her "well the fact is if you ask me Aristotle was severely autistic."
>no one says anything, cringe a bit but figure I got away with it
>two days later get called in the principal's office
>"Anon, did you disparage Aristotle for being autistic in one of your class sessions?"
>panicking, sweating in arm-pits interbuttocks and groin area
>"N-no, I said he was severely *artistic*. The student misheard me."
>he gives me a funny look and says "Oh, well, that's ok, uh, be more aware of how your words can be construed in this age of blablabla"

I have a job where I talk to young-ish girls (clerks) often and they're often reading. I always ask them about the book and if it's fantasy/porn (it always is), and I'm in a bad mood, I'll start yawning in the middle of them describing the retarded plot.

No, I don't tell people in real life that I read because we've gotten to a point where it just makes you sound like a pretentious twat, especially if you're reading pretentious twat authors like Adorno and Faulkner. They'll also always ask "so are you in school/going to grad school?" or some other embarrassing question. I learned years ago to keep the spaghetti in the pocket where it belongs.

Persia banned slavery and promoted religious tolerance. They arguably enjoyed a higher standard of living as well. History is written by the victors.

The Greco-Roman institution of slavery brought slavery and garish slave mansions to my beloved South, leading it to be burned to the ground and impoverished to this day.

It's fine if you're not autistic about it. Just say something general and positive like, "Right now I'm reading some Heidegger, dorky af but I think he's really cool." And then she'll probably say "oh, cool!" and turn the conversation to something else. You're going into it like your reading is a shameful secret, that's cringe, the female mind will subconsciously associate your behavior with wanking.

I once corrected a professor's pronunciation of dilettante. It comes from Italian, the e should be voiced. Then he pulled it up on Webster's and said I was "proven wrong, this time", and I said Webster's wasn't the best dictionary and he should look it up in the OED. He didn't, but if he had, he would have seen that I was right after all. I was actually seething about this for weeks because he was so smug about it but I was objectively correct. Similarly "forte" as in "that's my forte" should be pronounced like "fort" because it's from French, not Italian. I'm still kind of seething about it to this day that guy was a pseud in general.

I've been corrected multiple times and I always tell them it's spelled with an epsilon in Greek, which it is. Fucking pseuds everywhere I swear.

But this isn't about the organic evolution of the pronunciation of native words. I get it, no one says "uni-VAR-sity". These are loan words. Pronouncing dilettante like it's French is as retarded as pronouncing Jalapeno djalappeno.

Correcting anyone's pronunciation is an insanely pseud thing to do unless the person is themselves posturing like an intellectual, which I wasn't - I was just talking about the established common practice of people these days.

He went on to break down exactly what M E T A stood for, which means you should say the words M E T A every time, no? eat shit you pseud

Webster's is for American English, the global lingua franca. If you're having conversations in American English Webster's is generally the better authority. If you're having conversations outside of American English or trying to bring non-American pronunciation into American English you get what you deserve.

By the way, Webster's lists both pronunciations, it just lists his first. Both pronunciations are correct but yours is less common and you were incorrect to say that his was incorrect.

This is why I find it funny how there is this mystique around reading as "the most virtuous hobby" from essentially everybody of any social and political persuasion, to the point where even the neckbeard who sits in his basement playing LoL all day will still tell you that reading is a better hobby than videogames and he only chooses the latter through weakness of will
The reality is that (serious) reading is among the most antisocial hobbies you can possibly have. The LoL addict at least has an instant conversation topic and bedrock for a friendship if he runs into some other LoL fan in the wild, but I am never going to gain a friend through a mutual love of Irigaray's writings on Nietzsche and anyone who would talk about that in the first place is probably insufferable

Why are you embarrassed about the question? It's reasonable for them to ask given the contexts in which they've seen those books previously. I suspect you are embarrassed with yourself, not your reading habits. You should fix that.

I don't get it at all. So what? Just bring up something from Heidegger you found interesting or otherwise could share, see if she responds to that, and if not just close the topic and ask her something instead. That's what I do and they usually lean into it just fine, and I guarantee you I'm much more anxious and awkward and fumbling than anyone else here.
