Wisdom lies before the intelligent man;
The eyes of the dullard range to the ends of the earth.

Does that mean reading won't work for retards no matter what?

Don't think it does.

The mind is a malleable thing. I went to school with a 75 IQ chimpanzee who ate playdoh until the age of 14. He seemed destined for life in the kitchens of a sanatorium. Close to the trough. Yet, I bumped into him not more than three months ago, and he was completely transformed. He explained that his parents had died in a gas explosion, and the resulting suffering had, like a crucible, galvanised him into some harder material. He told me to read Moby Dick. I damn near shed a tear. Like metal, we are capable of being smelted down and hammered into shapes anew. There are precious metals hidden inside. Pain is the forge-flame.

I think it's because reading people need glasses so they dont see very far, because of the glasses and all the staring at words which the eyes werent made for, the eyes were made to hunt elk far away. While dullards have better vision, because they dont stare at black and white pages.
Yeah, thats what he meant.

Not really, where will, effort and luck meet, success will very often follow. Not always. But very often.

75 IQ recommending Moby Dick sounds pretty realistic actually.

That doesn't mean that reading won't work for retards. Reading works better for retards than for the intelligent.

Stupid people, or the unwise, can't see the wisdom that is right in front of them. They are unable to make those connections on their own. They can, however, be guided. This is where education and reading comes into play.

On the other hand, the most intelligent people don't need to read a million books to understand these things. It's obvious to them.

morons can be trained to repeat axioms in the relevant scenarios but I don't think they are capable of applying or comprehending them, only sharing them.

c..cool. but why moby dick? The homoerotism and that weird relationship (situationship?) with the slave was a little bit weird.
