I'm back in school at 32. I was a terrible undergrad in my 20s so I'm going back to finish my degree (B.Sc. in BIO & PSY) and also added Philosophy and English as minors to show I can be an "A"-grade student.

On my first day, one of my professors who is a preeminent scholar in Islamic philosophy, told me that Omar Khayyem kinda sucks and that we need to be paying much more attention to Ibn Arabi.

I also have a German professor teaching a course on Kant, Hegel and Schopenhauer, so that should be great.

I feel a little out of place but I'm glad I'm doing this.

What are you hoping to get out of it?

Erik Satie attended university in his late 30s, van Gogh attended some kind of university programme in his early 30s, Kent Haruf attended a creating writing programme in his late 30s, Donald Ray Pollock attended college for writing in his late 40s iirc.

I want to get into law school so I'm strengthening my application by tacking on a few minors and getting close to a 4.0. It'll offset my prior GPA, which was like a 2.2 (purely due to lack of effort).

In addition, I want to take philosophy and literature much more seriously to broaden my perspective and deepen my understanding of life.

I wish you luck. Your STEM background will be pretty helpful if you want to get into patent law. Hopefully you score on well on the LSAT, though I want to warn you the job market for lawyers is pretty oversaturated.

Good new is that they got rid of the logic games section of the LSAT, so you may find it easier than I did.

Thanks, anon. I got a 168 on the LSAT and will be retaking to break 170. Coincidentally, one of the Philosophy classes offered this semester of symbolic logicβ€”I'll basically be studying daily by doing this work.

I am in NY and currently work as a law clerk. Worst comes to worst, I can always clerk for one of our state trial courts, but I am not so concerned about finding a job, especially as I want to litigate.

Great point on patent law. Are you practicing in that field?

>need to take some classes at the local state college so I can apply to a masters program
>take a placement test
>pass easily but it takes the department a month and a half to grade it
>by that time the class is full
Fuck me. I'm the only one on the waitlist and the first day of classes is today.
Should I email the professor?

This is going to set me back another year isn't it.

Dude, that sucks. And I acutely empathize with losing time. I'm 32 and very much regret not doing things the right way the first time around. It really does restrict you in life through certain formalities where your papers define you.

I would email your school's Registrar office, the Department's Program Coordinator and/or Director, as well as the professor. You should go sit in and talk to the professor personally, perhaps.

This seems a bit narrow-minded, anon. Most if not all walks of life have something to teach.

You should have a plan unless you want to invest time/money into learning purely for learning's sake. But with AI and internet resources, that's probably not a good enough reason. You can def get a job teaching philosophy if you get your PhD though
