Reread the Silmarillion. All the ainur, vala or maia, who entered in to Arda were bound to it the same way, and they can't be killed in any meaningful sense. They don't really have bodies, and if the physical form they choose to take is damaged beyond repair they can just make a new one. The only exception to that rule are the wizards, whose souls were inserted in to actual living bodies for the sake of bringing them closer to the children of Iluvatar they were meant to advise. So I guess you could kind of say Saruman died, in that he had an actual body and not just a flesh puppet, but he's still a truly immortal soul that can't perish or be severed from Arda in any way. The wind from the west blowing his ghost away wasn't destruction, it was just rejection. He wasn't allowed to return to Valinor.

NTA but I recommend, although you can definitely see Donaldson improve his prose as the books go on. His editors did the best they could but Del Rey (infamous for reinventing epic-fantasy for slop) needed to push product.
The Chronicles isn't slop exactly, but Donaldson wasn't yet up to the job.
