I hate how if you look for recommendations for horror books it's always fucking stephen king, I don't want to read a book written by a pedophile.
Any good horror novels with a lot of buildup before the first "scare?" I've been combing through books I've been recommended over the years and a lot of them can't help but have fucked up scenes way too soon. I want books that know how to build tension without blowing their load or telling me through the protagonist that I should be losing my mind already.

They Thirst by Robert R. McCammon. It's set on Halloween and so far it's shockingly good. I think it's a forgotten gem of the Horror Genre, absolute pure schlock from start to finish but incredibly fun.

Negative Space was pretty good, you know there is something wrong from the beginning but it's not obvious what and things get progressively more fucked up and nasty as you find out.

No, because a good horror novel sets the tone by giving you a proper taste of what you are in for early instead of dragging things out until they disappointing end of the book.

Read a true crime book. I recommend The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer. Legit scary. And I'll throw in the famous and incendiary conspiracy classic Programmed to Kill, because it is legit very spooky at times. A few other suggestions: Perfume by Patrick Süskind; Pet Sematary by Stephen King; Let the Right One In (can't remember the author's name but he's Swedish), which happens to take place in October in 1980s Stockholm; The Story of the Eye which isn't exactly horror but it fits (a few years ago I read the entire thing on Hallowe'en night); and finally there's the enigmatic, putrid, and mysterious The Eyes by Aldapuerta, a slim volume of sheer, potent emetic power.

I have mixed feelings on dan simmons. He's a good author but in all of his stories I've read so far he gets weirdly fixated on describing his type of woman, he really has a thing for women that are smarter and more capable than men to a point that it stops seeming like an issue of writing depthy liberated female characters and more like he literally only has a fetish for them. Song of Kali makes me wonder if he's a bigot too.
