Once you start learning other languages you realise how pitiful their artistic output is. For films it’s even worse. Foreign languages are like the shitty country town with maybe 2 smart people, while English is the big city where, for whatever other problems it has, at least you can sustain intelligent and enriching conversation for once.

I think we have a lot of good german writers, but the pool is small in comparsion to english writers, so the works just never get translated and make it out of the german speech region in europe.
Also, a lot of english works get translated and released here, which pales the release of new german works easily, about 4:1 if we consider native language speaker populations.
