I do. The criticism is probably the best part of getting an MFA, you receive a great deal of it. It makes life after the MFA feel like the most solitary and isolating thing, you just live alone in year head with nothing but your writing to keep you company, almost no feedback and what little you do get lacks muceh depth or insight. First year after completing my MFA was especially difficult but things got easier and I learned to not rely on that constant feedback, but I still miss it.

What is worth doing? Art and science are the basis of civilization. The arts are worthwhile, an education in the arts is not a waste. As long as you make something of it, give something back to civilization.

If every bright young man or woman is squeezed into a mold which teaches them to think the value of a mind is the salary it can gain in service to the state and corporations then society will lose its soul.

Can you imagine that sort of world? A soulless, consumerist technocracy yielding mass surveillance, high tech death machines, and an endless stream of sociopathically manipulative social media content aggregators? Can you imagine? Like a dystopian sci fi novel.

Getting published is easy. Writing something which lasts and has a real affect is considerably more difficult and even while riding the high of getting published I knew that the only worth my published works had was in showing how to develop as a writer, assuming I ever managed to write something of real worth. Complacency has never been enough for me, fairly jealous of those that need nothing else.
