But his worldview is *kind of* a cucked mentality. It's built on the premise that your purpose is explicitly to serve your social betters to the absolute exclusion of your own personal dignity and well-being. By the time at which this was written, the samurai caste had become mostly ornamental, and the proud martial tradition was coming second to skill at tea ceremony and such.
