/lit/ culture stays more or less the same, the topics shift with the years.
>I used to see eternal marx, incel lit, pessimist, and christcuck threads
When I first started posting here (like 2012?) the topics were the meme trilogy, Harold Bloom memes and quotes, David Benatar, Tao Lin and alt-lit, with some marx and christcuck threads thrown in. Five or six years ago /lit/ wouldn't shut the fuck up about Girard.

An intense political environment has made people incurious. Philosophies are now being adopted downstream of political positions rather than the other way around. This carries a risk in exploring different philosophical movements because it might inadvertently cause a compromise on politics which have become more fundamental in some way.

I guess I'd still consider this my homeboard, but with how slow it's gotten and the overwhelming spam of Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky threads by newfag broccoli heads, I mostly shizopost on /x/ now. A lot of philosophy already reaches eerie and schizo conclusions (at least by the standards of naive realism), so I often find better conversation there than among the /pol/ migrants and pop-existentialists that infest this board.

the other day, /g/ caught a bunch of bots. across multiple boards you could see almost the exact same posts, completely irrelevant to whatever thread they were posted in. only a couple of words were changed, but even the formatting was exactly the same.

My hope is that as the web becomes ever more enshittified and an ocean of bots and chaos, byzantinus.net will be a rather serene refuge of order where people can discuss the humanities, local cultures, traditions, etc, in peace. It being invite-only makes it more resistant to the degeneration of open spaces, because it prevents drive-by trolling and low-effort-posting, since one could lose their login code or be banned for inviting many trolls. I do not tolerate offtopic or low effort post, you have 4chan for that.

I know that the conditions do not make it conductive for very casual light discussion, and that will hurt adoption, but I think it is a worthy tradeoff.

Hosting and dns are cheap so I can run it for years.

>/lit/ is dying
If i have to take a guess, that's because reading has become a somewhat fringe hobbie or endevour. People who actually have devotion to reading what they like just don't waste time with pseuds discussing "philosophy", "religion" or "self help" or whatever late grifting come across except for the occasional knee jerk reaction to shit and sage on it. As a result, bots, fags and glowies alike ignore this board almost completely, and shills are at minimum as well. The rest of the boards are active because lesser mediums get more attention, but it's mostly because of the current state of affairs in the world and their impact of them; novels doesn't get this much traction because the attention it's no longer there, it's in the visual, more retard friendly stuff. I would say that the only bastion on the web for the truly dedicated to reading and writing at this point is pic related. Everything else sucks.

the nature of the board means it will never be popular, besides Philosophy/classics the range of material is too wide, and reading is too time consuming, to ever have the robust kind of dialogue that more easily consumable media like MU and TV brings. People will post an interesting book and even reading a solid 1-2 hours hours per day, and my current list means I'd get to it 6 months later.

Excessive moderation has been in ridiculous overdrive since Covid, which is when the real decline of 4chan (in posting numbers) started to happen. You can see that in the stats from the archives.
The fundamental appeal of 4chan is not anonymity, but more specifically low commitment to post, of which anonymity is but one aspect.
When people are constantly in a state of paranoia regarding if they'll get banned or not, posting becomes a drag.

Religion and Philosophy needs their own boards.
Self Help dogshit needs his own general.
Frogposting and similar need to be banned on sight.
And maybe some other details im missing. But i think we're already past the point of no returns.
The vast majority of the catalog is to the brim of spam, low effort posts, blogposting, shitposting and shilling in radioactive levels, that kick out of the place any decent, honest thread of some poor goober that wanted to use the place for its intended purpose. There's almost never actual literary works discussions, and every time there is, is derailed by the very same schizos that commit the offenses mentioned above and keep shitting up the board. This is not a /lit/ exclusive trait, because 4chan as a whole as become unusable. There is no place for book discussion anymore, so people either gave up on it, or lurk here sometimes once in a green moon to see if there's some thread of worth among what interest you, which is almost never. Every other imageboard site it's a phantom zone, and every single forum its useless trash, so the illusion of activity it's maintained by some few suckers that expect that this godforsaken place may have hope of fixing itself trough some process of osmosis, but deep down we all know that's not happening, and its time to move on. This is the start of the dark ages of the internet where every single place become unusable for real people, and we will have to start again creating enclaves with others alike while gatekeeping as much as possible, or keep going by our own. Rest in feces.

i knew several people who were good posters on 4chan years back, but it was just one site out of many they used, and they would usually find friends to add from these places. if you're someone who puts a high priority on anonymous posting, you're probably mentally ill in some way. even if you find topics popular on /lit/ interesting, the way this place covers them is shallow & always has been. you'd be infinitely better off making a friend who knows a lot about schopenhauer or perennial philosophy or whatever niche thing you care about. the only reason not to is mental illness. it makes a lot of sense that unwell people would cluster in anonymous spaces, maybe subconsciously they don't like what they've become even if they always blame other people for it.

insecurity is one reason to post anonymously. but my main one is that it's harder to see your post history. there are no faggots going back 2 years to find some dumb shit you said back then to bring it up again now and then make a huge digression about it. I don't wanna have to deal with 20 different notifications before I make any post, but if I ignore them the faggots will follow me around to demand responses to their shit in other threads or under other comments. it's fucking annoying. I just wanna shit post, not get embroiled in literally years long personal feuds. now THAT shit is fucking mental illness, and what you see on places like reddit and traditional forums. 4chins posters are all mentally ill no doubt, but I think forum posters are probably worse. maybe reddit less so just because of all the normies there, but regular posters there sure aren't sane.

Some of us still carry on the spirit of the early internet which was keep your identity to yourself and it's still a sound practice. You, of course, know about doxing and "cancelling" which weaponizes social media posts. I don't want some shitpost or an intentionally contrarian viewpoint taken out of context and misconstrued as my actual beliefs. And yes, the government does monitor social media.

there's no way i could post someplace with a permanent profile because i take wildly contradictory positions in different threads and sometimes even in parallel sub-conversations within one thread. it's not even "trolling" or whatever, it's just completely natural to me and if that's mental illness then i don't want to be sane.

In some ways, Discord has done this and its through more hidden channels. Less of the internet is 'visible' through it. Same, I guess, with Telegram and other such channels. There have always been chatrooms, but I feel these semi-hidden places have proliferated. There are more 'rooms' but less 'corridors' to find them.

same lel, my opinions change day by day, even minute by minute.
I actually think permanent accounts go a long way to explain the increasing polarisation you see in the world today, people are too stressed about being ideologically consistent and conforming to certain ideals, and when every post you make contributes to your own personal history there's a constant self-correction going on. There isn't a grounded, forthright discussion on a given topic at hand, opinions are informed by the greater narratives surrounding the issue.
Anonymous posting is so important for this because you can post the most retarded, awful ignorant shit and it'll be completely forgotten a day or two later, it's so important for growth and it allows teenage and young adult retards to easily escape the extremist traps often seen online and which they're so susceptible to.

So true, there's a kind of internalising of politician-speak going on. I understand that public figures need to choose their words perfectly because they can easily be misconstrued and they need to conform to party or political considerations, that's just the nature of the game, but I don't like that your average person is taking that upon themselves too like it's the "right" way.
