Pauses, intonation, other prosody, commas, all of these are copes of a poor language. In a language which marks adjectives for which noun they are modifying for example, you don't have to cope with the above to convey what you mean, you convey it with the suffix, which is much more sophisticated way.

You made the counter-proposition, you back it up, you didn't. Hence I don't need to back my proposition up. Learn logic. Literally accusing me of not providing an argument, when you didn't provide an argument yourself, at all, but only a proposition. I bet you don't even know the difference between a proposition and an argument.

maybe that would be true if there was any reasoning to back up your "proposition" in the first place.all you did was state that inflection was more "sophisticated" because it just is ok.

It's a shit language. Heavy reliance on word order, commas and intonation. A language that has fixed word order is not fit for poetry. Relying on commas and prosody to convey meaning means you're adding shit onto the language to cope with the poverty of the actual language. It's like someone is speaking and then they have to make fucking animal noises and hand gestures on top of the actual words because the words themselves are not able to convey what you're trying to say.

>A language that has fixed word order is not fit for poetry.
Because we cannot copy the rules of Latin poetry (who in turn copied Greek rules against their native verses)? Poetry isn't dogma; each language develops its own styles of poetry. There have been numerous poets in English, despite the word order (which can be freely broken in poetry).
To suggest one language is "poetically superior" to another is the height of arrogance.

Okay, and what is your argument for why how Latin does it is superior to how English does it? (Also, at least to my intuition the first would be more naturally translated as "he painted a picture of the laughing girl" but that's besides the point.)

Ridentis/ridens is the same in writing and speech. The comma is in writing only. The only way to convey it in speech is with a pause, which is far less clear than ridentis vs ridens and is prone to being misunderstood. Also, as a general rule, marking verbs and adjectives for which noun they're referring to makes for less ambiguity. It also means you're not dependent on word order, and flexible word order is an advantage in poetry, because you can easily move around words in a sentence to make it rhyme with another sentence, without affecting the meaning.

And what of the devices enabled by analytic grammar, like juxtaposing sentences composed of the exact same words in a different order? In a synthetic language they would have to have different forms, and the effect would be different.

I don't know much about poetry. I've been looking into amphiboly mostly and there Latin beats English.
Anonymous No.24724619 [Report] >>24724633

The traditional terminology of Western poetry is built around Greek and Latin, of course it's going to be biased towards describing the things they're good at, not the things English is good at. Look into the traditional terminology of Chinese poetry, they have a lot of words for concepts that wouldn't even make sense in Latin.

Alright but this thread is about commas and prosody, such as pauses and intonation, being a mere cope, unsuccessfully trying to make up for lack of inflections for example.
Anonymous No.24724638 [Report] >>24724689

nta but there are so many ways to say the same thing that ambiguity or misunderstanding can be avoided by simply choosing different words.
If someone is reading a sentence aloud which includes a comma, such as in the example you provided previously, they can simply include a slight pause to imply the presence of a comma and the audience will understand.
It's such an insignificant thing which almost never comes up in conversation so it makes no real difference on the practical usability of the English language which can be clearly seen through its proliferation across the globe.
You're grasping at straws here

>nta but there are so many ways to say the same thing that ambiguity or misunderstanding can be avoided by simply choosing different words.
No. I'm talking about syntactic ambiguity, not semantic ambiguity.
>they can simply include a slight pause to imply the presence of a comma
Again, inferior to suffixes.
>and the audience will understand.
Again, there's a much greater risk they won't, compared to when using suffixes.
