George Shart Shart Fartin is a hack who couldn't write a single story from start to finish if his fat life depended on it
BUT
it's incredibly funny how his mere existence as an author absolutely mindfucks tolkienfags so hard he lives rent-free in their heads 24/7.
For that alone, to witness that absolute tolkienist seethe and coping, gurm's failure of a series is worth liking

People who brand GRRM as some kind of evil nihilistic anti-Tolkien are usually just cultural warriors who haven't actually read LOTR (or ASOIAF). They just see the "Aragorn's tax policy" quote and assume that he is an evil commie and hates Tolkien (who is le trad, based and racist).

rarely do people discuss non-asoiaf works of martin, though it may be surprising that before writing got, he was working on his magnus opus in the 1000 world settings, avalon

here's the most i could find from wertzone:

>Avalon (started 1991)
Martin was 100-odd pages into writing Avalon, a big SF epic set on one of the most notable planets in his Thousand Worlds setting, when he was distracted by an idea he'd had about a deserter being beheaded in the snow, watched by a young boy and his family. That led to a tangent which, over a quarter of century later, remains unfinished. It's unclear if Martin seriously plans to finish Avalon once A Song of Ice and Fire is completed, but it's also notable that Martin has never published the material he had completed for the book (unlike his other unfinished novel, Black and White and Red All Over), suggesting he may have some plans for it in the future.

https://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2017/09/the-compleat-george-rr-martin.html

if you have not read his 1000 world books, the setting is that humans got into a two way war with 2 alien species and all sides resorted to biological warfare in some capacity to defeat the other, after many years, a truce was called between all the 3 parties, but in the interim of the war, many planets that had been settled by humans had been reduced to iron age or even bronze age civilisations but with weird sci fi twists, and this era is where most of his stories are set, in the interregnum

avalon was the capital of the manrealm after all the wars had abated, and one that was still technologically competent unlike many other settlements, and this was were his story was to be set

a very long line of what if separates us from avalon, but wert does mention that martin never cannibalised material of this work into any other, so maybe in the future

I really wish someone would ask him what his plot idea was for Avalon instead of "Hey George what advice would you suggest for new writers? :)" and other shit he gets asked repetitively at conventions.

>many planets that had been settled by humans had been reduced to iron age or even bronze age civilisations but with weird sci fi twists, and this era is where most of his stories are set, in the interregnum
btw, this is why for the longest time people held onto the belief that ASOIAF was set in the Thousand Worlds.

this is how in the house of the worm starts:

>For ages past remembering, the House of the Worm had been lost in
decay, and that was as it should be, for decay is but one name of the
White Worm himself. So the yaga-la-hai, the worm-children, only smiled
and went on as always, though the tapestries rotted on the walls of their
endless burrows and their numbers dwindled each year, though meat grew
ever more scarce, and the very stone around them turned to dust. In the
high burrows with slit windows, awash with the red dimness of the vast
dying ember above, they came and went and lived their lives. They tended
their torches and held their masques, and made the sign of the worm
whenever they passed near the dark windowless burrows where the
grouns were said to mutter and lie in wait (for the halls and tunnels of the
House of the Worm were reputed to be infinite, descending as far below
the earth as the black sky ascends above, and the yaga-la-hai claimed only
a few of its many ancient chambers).

more than anything it is melancholy that is heavy in most of his works, its not all that appreciable in asoiaf
Anonymous No.24730109 >>24731018
>>24730070
yeah, someone needs to ask him about avalon, most people who end up going to the convention are for the most parts "super" fans, and they dont really show any appreciation of his earlier works

another could be how the failure of the armageddon rag led to his growth as a writer, as he is markedly different writer pre- and post- armageddon rag

or something about windhaven and whether he intends to write in collab with lisa tuttle again, so many things to ask, but wasted on the hip crowd

>btw, this is why for the longest time people held onto the belief that ASOIAF was set in the Thousand Worlds.

Honestly George didn't say anything too offensive. He did go off about how hard magic sucks but I don't think he said anything controversial.

I think the mormon comment got cut, if it even happened. He says something along the lines of "Yeah I figured out Santa didn't exist when I was 7. But worse, a year later I started applying the same logic to Jesus" and then Ryan Cahill made a joke to diffuse the whole conversation. Honestly he had some pretty good comments in this thing overall, maybe I'll check out one of his books.

To summarize
>how Tolkien changed worldbuilding and how Dunsany and Howard now pale in comparison today in regards to believable worlds (also how romantasy has led to a regression in the quality of worldbuilding)
>How the publishing industry learned the wrong lessons from the success of Tolkien
>Terry Goodkind made it big solely because Robert Jordan missed a deadline
>research is important to immersion, e.g. George talked to paraplegics when writing Bran in AGoT, but got fucking destroyed by winemakers for putting the Arbor on an island.
>how fucked the current state of fantasy television
>Brandon Sanderson roasted an editor by name for saying "No one wants to read about vampires" the year before Twilight was published.
>how self-publishing has changed fantasy writing
>chasing fads is bad, write what (You) want to write. More or less, "If you build it, they will come." This also ties into why fantasy television adaptations are so bad- because rather than stand on its own, everything has to be either parroting Harry Potter or parroting Game of Thrones in its adaptation. Shoutout to Arcane, but no one mentioned how bad season 2 was.

GRRM isnโ€™t even good from a technical standpoint, though. He constantly forgets details, and then reintroduces them in the next book once he realizes his mistake and retcons reasons why they werenโ€™t mentioned before.

Lazy writer whose obsession with plot isnโ€™t even something he can fully commit to.

He literally hired autists to keep track of what he's written.

Which doesn't help when he introduces a song or a saying that everyone has known for the last 100 years and suddenly repeats constantly except it just wasn't ever mentioned in the last three books.

I think its become a case of the more famous an author is the less pushback they get from editors because how dare they question the mighty genius of this author etc. It happens to a lot of famous authors. In fact not just authors, directors etc. They get too scared to question. For example George Lucas' original Star Wars trilogy was full of push backs and edits and his wife filtered a lot. Meanwhile the prequels he was infamously surrounded by Yes Men.

Because Arthur and the other Kingsguard wouldn't give up. Ned was trying to talk to them, but they were already getting ready to fight Ned and his boys while they were conversing.
>โ€œI looked for you on the Trident,โ€ Ned said to them.
>โ€œWe were not there,โ€ Ser Gerold answered.
>โ€œWoe to the Usurper if we had been,โ€ said Ser Oswell.
>โ€œWhen King's Landing fell, Ser Jaime slew your king with a golden sword, and I wondered where you were.โ€
>โ€œFar away,โ€ Ser Gerold said, โ€œor Aerys would yet sit the Iron Throne, and our false brother would burn in seven hells.โ€
>โ€œI came down on Storm's End to lift the siege,โ€ Ned told them, and the Lords Tyrell and Redwyne dipped their banners, and all their knights bent the knee to pledge us fealty. I was certain you would be among them.โ€
>โ€œOur knees do not bend easily,โ€ said Ser Arthur Dayne.
>โ€œSer Willem Darry is fled to Dragonstone, with your queen and Prince Viserys. I thought you might have sailed with him.โ€
>โ€œSer Willem is a good man and true,โ€ said Ser Oswell.
>โ€œBut not of the Kingsguard,โ€ Ser Gerold pointed out. โ€œThe Kingsguard does not flee.โ€
>โ€œThen or now,โ€ said Ser Arthur. He donned his helm.
>"We swore a vow,โ€ explained old Ser Gerold. Nedโ€™s wraiths moved up beside him, with shadow swords in hand. They were seven against three.
>โ€œAnd now it begins,โ€ said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light.
>โ€œNo,โ€ Ned said with sadness in his voice. โ€œNow it ends.โ€

I've been thinking of writing a fanfiction (Seethe about it George. Or finish the damn book). I'd lean into George's writing style but the general idea I've been thinking of is a story that runs parallel to a Game of Thrones. Basically the POV of a knight belonging to a small family in the Crownlands. Have their account as they ride North with Robert's entourage, set their first POV during the hunt that happens the day Bran falls. I'd split them off after Lady dies. I don't recall if it's mentioned if her remains make it back to Winterfell but I'd have this knight be the one to take up the duty of returning her home.

The real question is, would any of you ever be willing to read it if I put it to paper?

no, your premise is not interesting enough. Where's the hook, why would I want to read the same thing as the books?
you must understand you are going against an absolute deluge of content, thousands of fandoms, millions of words of fanfiction, more interesting premises (isekais, gary sues, crossovers, etc). To say nothing about non-written entertainment...
Maybe you would've gotten some traction many many years ago, at the start, but not now.
